Can't see album art in Mercedes Benz Comand audio system

I have a 2011 MB with Comand audio system and Media Interface that connects and works perfectly with my iPod Classic except for one thing: album artwork. Playing some albums the cover art appears and others don't for example AAC songs bought in the iTunes Store. I have tried exporting to mp3 and Apple Lossless and embed manually the picture with no results, seems not something related with the audio type but the picture type or size, but I don't know how to check the embedded picture information of the working ones to try putting the same kind to all the rest. Any idea?

Helpful tips tcant, thank you. I also take the artwork from Amazon, the big one mostly 500x500. What I am doing now is taking pictures with the iPhone during the week of the tracks that don't show the picture, I correct them when I get home and I transfer the changes during the weekend. I keep the unresolved ones in a folder and I will try to get that common theme you mentioned in the future.

Trinity, I have more success to report and a possible solution to your Marc Almond 2 CD problem. None of the artwork was showing for any CD which came as a 2 CD set or even 3, 4 or 5 CD set. I have now overcome this problem.

1) Go to Amazon and find the album cover. Save multiple copies of the picture (1 copy for each CD in your set) and name each one slightly differently to your PC. For example almond 1 and almond 2

2) Go to itunes and view your albums by album cover

3) Go to the first of the albums in the set and right click on the cover. Click on 'Get Info' then 'yes' to edit multiple selections.

4) Just above the artwork box on the right it may say disc 1 of 2 or 1 of 3 or 2 of 2 or it may even be blank. Enter 1 of 1 in here no matter what it says.

5) Check the artwork box and double click inside the box. Select the artwork you just saved from amazon and OK.

6) Repeat the above for the second CD and this time attach the other copy of the artwork you saved.

7) Keep repeating if you have a 3 CD set etc etc

8) Sync your ipod to itunes and then disconnect and close itunes.

9) Copy the artist directory you just changed to your external drive and plug it into comand and update the cover flow.

10) Plug in your ipod and the artwork should be there.

Please note some 'greatest hits' and 'best of' albums get stored in the 'compilations' folder by itunes and not the artist folder. Make sure the album is in the artist folder or you will need to copy the compilation folder to your external drive as well.

As I said, this has worked for all my double and triple albulms even a 5 CD box set.

Good luck!

Trinity, after much playing with the albums which would not show the artwork I have finally solved the problem! All 9,000 songs on my ipod now appear in COMAND with the artwork.

This is what I did to solve the remaining albums that would not work.

1) Go into itunes and view all the albums as a list

2) From the menu bar click itunes>preferences

3) Click on 'Import Settings' and change them to MP3 encoder (192 kbits)

4) Highlight all the tracks on the album which does not work in COMAND. Right click 'convert to MP3'

5) The original version will still be highlighted when it has finished converting - delete these, leaving only the MP3 version on your PC.

6) Put itunes back in album cover view mode and right click on the album you just converted to MP3.

7) Go to 'get info', then 'yes' and then re-apply the artwork by clicking in the box and attaching the artwork

8) Sync ipod

9) Close itunes and copy the artist folder to your external drive

10) Plug into COMAND and update the cover art again

11) Plug your ipod into COMAND and disconnect the external drive. The artwork will be there!

I have some really obscure stuff and a combination of this approach coupled with your original answer and my previous post on 2 CD sets now shows all art. In fact, I had some albums where I could not find any art so attached photo's of the band which weren't perfectly square and they work as well using this method.

Please let me know if you have any problems.

finally after four months I can say victoria! The whole library art appears in the Comand display. After checking all the art covers one by one and reconvert the whole library to MP3 (just to transfer the pictures) most of the artwork still did not appear. The culprit is once again the Comand that starts a stupid countdown from 1 to 5000 while transfering the artwork and just stops the process when it reaches 5000. Solution: do the transfers in blocks of 4000 songs, the counter still goes from 1 to 5000 but if seems to finish the work. I have been driving for more than 8 hours today and not a single fault. Hope this helps somebody else in the future...

Glad to hear you have finally cracked it Trinity. I found the 1 to 5000 countdown a problem too, but I am not convinced it represents 5000 songs. The reason being I copied one album across of about 15 songs and the counter went 1 to 27! To be safe I recommend anyone trying this to do it in batches of no more than 2000 songs.

I have 100% artwork as well now, so can now relax and enjoy for the next few years until I change cars again!

Thanks for all your help.

Hi, I have no problems viewing art work (now!) but do have the following problems:

- using iPod there is no search by cover functionality, but for HDD and SD card with a selection of albums it is available. Does anyone else have this issue and hopefully a fix? The cover art feature is great but I don't fancy migrating all my music to HDD when I have an iPod.

- comand seems to have registered multiple copies of amended songs/albums despite deleting the HDD contents, that is the display shows 3 copies but can only play one. This is only an issue for SD and HDD. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance if anyone can solve this.

no, there's no search by cover for the iPod, probably because Media Interface just let you use the native features of the iPod from the Comand controls... and there's no search by cover in the iPod.

And yes, Comand does duplicate some song informations, and it also keep old covers ignoring the ones you correct or change. In fact it is a very primitive system compared with the excellent devices we can plug in it...

Many thanks Trinty.

Think I will reset to factory settings and start again to clear the duplicate entries. I'm skipping the iPod and using SD since there is only ever a limited amount of albums I listen to; also the c63 means that I spend most of the time listening to the engine and exhaust.

Mercedes should team up with apple, this would be a pretty impressive system if they did.

Hi all,

I've also worked on this and the post by Trinity got me so far using a USB stick to allow it to initially import the album artwork then use my iPod to host the music.

What I'm having a hcallenge with is that I have a lot of Artwork attributed to MP3/AAC files that are not albums, i,e singles that have been digitised from vinyl and imported with artwork, these do not seem to work even after following these tips.

Anyone got any further suggestions? It seems to work OK when running from a USB stick, I like to have my iPod sync back to my iTunes reflecting Play Count, ratings, etc and playing from a USB device in the car does not allow this.

Cheers,

TD

Yes Tiger Dude, it happened to me too, you are probably transfering too many songs in a single batch as I did at first. Try putting only the problematic singles in the usb stick and it will probably work. The MB Comand seems start reading the disk and creating art records using artist/album as a key so only one song of the album makes the whole album show the picture. The counter that we see while importing the art is just a timer, not a real file counter so when if finishes many songs have not been read so the albums with more songs have much more possibilities to be transfered than the singles.

OK, here is what I have just tried. I have a old favourite artist, DJ Isaac. I have copied all of the osngs that I have that are Artist Name "DJ Isaac" from my iTune library at OS level to the USB stick. I attach that to the Comand via the USB port and then Browse by Cover, I get the message asking if I want to import all remaning covers/artwork which I do.

I then attach my iPod and look for tracks by DJ Isaac, not many of them (if any) have artwork visible.

DJ Isaac's tracks are not part of any album, I don;t have an Album or Artist Album attributed to them in Itunes or on the MP3 tag. I tried to create an album called "Single Tracks' and apply this to my singles but this had no effect.

What do I try now?
