untitled page at startup
Ever since the Lion update, an irritating untitled.pages document comes up automatically whenever I start Pages. I'd rather have it start blank. How do I do that? Thx

Tried that; but learned that Pages starts with an Untitled document whenever the previous document I worked on was a .doc file. In other words, I finish with the .doc file, export it (because Pages doesn't let me just save it for some reason), go out of Pages, and when I start Pages again, the text I was just working on is there again, but as an Untitled document. How to prevent this?
You never saved it, which is why it never has a name, just save it.
Peter
Peter,
I am having the exact same problem. But I "saved" the untitled file, once as a named file, then another time I deleted the text and saved it as "unsaved.pages." When I open Pages, I STILL get the original page of text with the filename of 'untitled.pages.'
What am I missing here?
KC
Pages may be reading that name and taking it literally, then acting as Peter described above.

Barry
Did you save it as a template perhaps?
Why would you save a document as "unsaved", that is like calling your dog "Cat".
Peter
Peter, I mis-typed the name. I saved it as "untitled.pages," just to see if that was the problem. And I didn't know what you meant when you wrote, "Just save it." I then deleted "untitled.pages' from the documents folder. There is no user template named "untitled" that I can see by looking in the users My Templats folder.
Pages, on startup is finding this template SOMEWHERE, but I'm not sure where. It's driving me nuts.

There really are only two possibilities:
1. You have nominated at some point that this document is the default document to open in preferences.
or
2. OSX is simply finding and opening a document that was not closed in the last session.
I suggest you alter the document, save it and then go to Finder and view All My Files in the sidebar of a Finder window. It should then be amongst the recent files or you can narrow it down by typing "untitled" in the search field. Bit of a problem using that name, but you have to live with that.
Just delete the file when you find it, if you want to know where it was show the file path:
Finder > Menu > View > Show Path Bar
…and it will appear at the foot of the window when you select the file.
Peter
Thanks for your reply, Peter.
Started Pages - the untitled file appeared. Made changes, then went to save. Unfortunately, I have to choose the location for saving the file. The option to just save is not available, so I am forced to save into a documents folder or something like that. Then, as I'm about to close the file, Pages displays a warning that I cannot save the file because it is locked. Hmmm... I will say that the file was ORIGINALLY a Word .doc file that I inadvertently opened in Pages, just to see what it was. I never saved the file though. Just closed it.
Looked in Finder for any "untitled" files. Found plenty, but none were the one in question.
So, any chance we can run down the location of that untitled file somewhere else?
Even though I told Pages to use the Template chooser on startup, the 'ghost' file appears first. After closing, I click on the Pages icon again and the Template chooser appears.

You might try a spotlight search using part of the content of the document as the search term.

Barry
It sounds like the file has been saved somewhere in your System folder where Spotlight does not search.
Another possibility is you opened an attachment to an email (very likely). Have a look through Mail for a possible suspect, going on its contents.
Whilst Spotlight won't search your system files,

and

both free, will.

No joy...found plenty of untitled files, but nothing panned out. What happens if I remove Pages, then re-install? I still have my templates and documents.
KC
Your files are separate from Pages, you can completely delete and reinstall all Pages files.
I would make a backup of your templates folder however, that might get overwritten.
But honestly I don't think it is Pages, it is the System that reopens previously opened files. I am hearing what you are saying, just I don't think you have uncovered it yet. I strongly believe that it was probably an email attachment.
Any clues in the file? It must contain something that hints at its origin.
How about cleaning up/naming those untitled files, the best way to lose anything is in a lot of other stuff you don't know what it is.
Peter
Here's a screen shot of part of the document:
As you can see, the title is simply "Untitled" without any extension. The file is from an old Microsoft Word directory that was in my documents folder. At one point a few months ago I opened the file (It was a .doc file) to see what it was. This document still appears each and every time I open Pages. I don't remember if I closed it properly or what I did to the file, but I deleted the entire directory a few days ago since it was no longer needed. I do not believe it was saved as a 'blank' template, but it IS possible that happened, however whenever I open a blank document from the template chooser, a real, blank document opens. I looked in the contents of the Pages package and couldn't find where any file was of a date newer than the main package, so I'm assuming it's not in there.
The specific behavior is as follows: Open Pages (even when the "Open from Template Chooser" is selected in preferences), "Untitled" document opens. Close "Untitled" document. No save. Template Chooser opens, so I can choose a template from which to start.
I agree with you that the file must reside somewhere, but I'm interested to know where the system looks to find previously opened files. Also, since it was a .doc file I'm wondering if it somehow affected Pages in an adverse manner.
So...Maybe a call to Apple is in order?

I found out the problem. FINALLY. Looked at this link: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1245153
and about half way down found a folder I needed to look at.
For sandboxed apps, the autosave information for "unsaved" documents can apparently be found in ~/Containers/com.apple.Textedit/Data/Library/Autosave Information (for Textedit) For non-sandboxed apps, have a look at ~/Autosave Information __________________ |
So, I deleted the Unsaved Pages Document.pages and voila!!! Done. No more problem. The Unsaved Pages Document WAS the document that kept opening. Originally, when searching the system for the problem file, I was searching for Untitled, not Unsaved, because the document kept opening as named "Untitled"....Duh!!!!
At least the problem is solved now. Thanks for all your suggestions!
