I have a Motif 6 and I'm trying to connect it to my Mac Book Pro and use it with Logic Pro 9 and I can't get them to work together, the youtube videos are not working for me, can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have my Motif set up but for some reason I can't get it to play through my logic pro 9.

Logic Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Should be able to help you as I have a number of external synths working with Logic. Afraid I'll need more detail and information about your setup and what you've attempted already. Assume you have an audio/MIDI interface with at least 2 audio inputs and MIDI In and Out ports available?

The best way I've found of doing this is to create a software instrument track and use the External Instrument plug-in, whereby you then choose the MIDI ports and audio inputs you have your synth connected to. This then gives you a single track in the Arrange window, just like you have with a soft synth.

Let me know some more details I'll try and get back to you later.

There is no audio interface, my Motif is connected to my computer using the USB port. I have my Motif Setup whereby I have midi set to usb and sync set to internal. When I create a midi instrument track on logic and turn the volume up to "0", I get a loud high pitched noise and then when I adjus the volume on my computer, the high pitched screech goes away, but I still don't here my keyboard through my computer and when i try to record just for the **** of it, nothing is recorded. Thank you for your response and I hope that is all the detail you need, that it literally all I have done, I got those steps from Youtube.

An original classic 6, you'll need an audio interface to get sound in and out of logic. That high pitched squeal is probably feedback, your mic on your computer coming back thru the speakers. Same can happen with headphones I've heard...

If you're only wanting to use the motif 6 as a controller, and only use the sound sources of logic, then MIDI over USB is all you need...

Might I suggest finding at least an ES series Motif or later? Over USB, the Motif ES or later is a nice controller for Logic, you can start, stop, arm for recording... etc from the Motif itself. The original classic Motifs have a Logic mode but far from useful... The ES series are cheap secondhand...

And...

The ES had the ability to do digital audio over mLAN... FireWire. Really cool... The XS had something similar over FireWire too...

Check out motifator.com for everything Motif...

I have no audio interface. Is that what is needed to hear the sounds from the Motif? Is using it as a controller all I can do without the interface using just the usb? If so that's fine, I just want to be able to record in Logic. The Motif is a recording/sequencing device all it's own and I have a boss digital recorder for my plug in instrument, I just wanted to utilize my MacBook as well. I appreciate you taking the time to help me with this, I know that I just need to learn the basics and I will be on my way. So if all I want to use is the USB, can you walk me through the set up in Logic and on my Motif if it's not too much trouble? I downloaded the driver from the yamaha website.

No audio interface, means no sound out of your motif or anything else you might want to record which comes from anything other than the sounds with logic itself.

Logic will be replacing the recording/sequencing you've done on the Motif, that's why you have Logic...

Don't wanna sound rude, but what you're asking goes beyond what one can do in this forum.

Might I suggest, alongside motivator.com, macprovideo.com. Lots of training there. Sign up for monthly plan and follow all the tutorials you want, then once you've got the hang of it, cancel your plan. Money well spent.

Wow... are you in for a learning experience... makes me wonder why you purchased a $500 professional level recording program when Garageband (a very capable subset of Logic) would do everything you want and do a better job of teaching you the basics. From a long time user, I can say with absolute certainty it's better to learn recording/engineering/creating music in Logic from the ground up rather than the top down.

Your USB port is a MIDI Interface, it has nothing to do with actual sound.

Go read up on what MIDI is and it's capabilities. Read the manuals.. there's several chapters that cover what you're trying to do.

I don't necessarily have to record my motif as audio, I just want it all to work together and don't know how to go about it......it's true i need to do some reading, but even that isn't as clear as I thought it would be. I was reading the logic manual and it goes into some deep stuff that I have not quite gotten to yet. So if I have to use my Motif as a controller via midi/usb, so be it.....I did download and install a driver yesterday. so where to from there? Thanx again for the assist!
