Can I install windows 8 through boot camp?

I suppose I can give that a try. However, I would love to do it on a seperate partition.

I downloaded VirtualBox and installed it on my Windows 7 partition. My shiny new virtual machine won't recognize my Windows 8 disk as... well, anything.

Given the problems with even beta and RC and with security tools, going to also want to be sure that Microsoft Security Essentials. Because Symantec Norton 360; Kaspersky; all needed testers but real problem to use.

Within Windows OS, to shrink your Windows (7) space provided that there is enough to also contain Windows 8, command+r gives run command, enter: compmgmt.msc

Click "Disk Management" then right click on your Windows C: drive space, selecting Shrink Volume. Your setting will result in (simple) volume space that you right click format to NTFS and drive letter is assigned ( D/E: name it Windows 8 ).

Come back here when in W 8 if you want to right click "offline" the Mac space. This Ultimate? feature is not possible in Windows 7 Home where I Mac space in Device Manager.

When you (Option Key) reboot with the W8 ISO you select the cd/dvd and install to Windows 8 drive space you created.

In either Windows OS, command+r gives run command, enter: SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe
Select startup & recovery Settings tab: here you can vary the default windows os boot & a time for menu to display so default can be changed despite default

When you are in Windows 8 with its difficult menu setup, to get back to a normal Start menu:
command+r gives run command, enter: regedit
In
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Change value of
RPEnabled from "1" to "0"
Exit regedit.
Press the start icon

You can go back to the new (ab)normal menu system by changing it back to 1

If you don't need Hibernate (Hiberfile onC:), you can Off it at command prompt: powercfg -h off

Suprised to see that Pagefile in Windows 8 is 3GB less than Windows 7's 8 GB

Besides that, also make sure that your computer has the Virtualization Technology (VT-x/AMD-V) activated in the BIOS.

At least it works, all my email and such are still there after upgrade in place.

Dealing with updates and reinstalling now.

Pretty sure MS Security Essentials works, but that Kaspersky Pure will not.

I just installed it on a virtual machine using VirtualBox (thanks, Probe_Droid!). It feels rough and unfinished (which, to be fair, it is). Everything was working OK as far as I could tell when suddenly I was in something called Socialite and there was no way to get out; my only choices were "sign into FaceBook" and... nothing. The mouse buttons did nothng, nor did the escape key or any other key I tried. And of course there was no help available.

I ended up turning off the virtual machine to get out. I hope it's not in that state when I turn it back on!

ETA: OK, I am now in IE in Windows 8, which is is running on a virtual machine within Windows 7. This is all so meta that I just can't stand it. But apparently, turning off the virtual machine worked. Now if I could figure out where the stuff that usually lives in the Start Menu is hidden, I'll be all set! 😝

I'm sooooo glad I didn't install this hot mess over 7, or I'd be spending the rest of the evening wiping my BootCamp partition and getting 7 back!

Just finished setting up iTunes 10.4.1 and works fine.

Feels fine. Fast and stable and no hiccups. More like Windows 7 RC than the Beta.

Blame it on VM. And trying to run as a guest OS.

As I force myself I find how and where to get Desktop view, or use it as a giant iPad/iPod Touch.

Just wanted to get rid of default big icons it uses and can't find where to uninstall or hide games and such.

Safe to use natively. But really depends on native drivers. I would say it is fine on a PC and says more about Apple and proprietary hardware probably. I doubt most any mainstream motherboard from the last 4 yrs needs to worry.

Yeah, but my MBP doesn't have touchscreen capabilities! So... I'm able to get into those applications, but not out of them. And where's the stuff that's usually in the Start Menu? No clue!

I've done it successfully on my new I5 MacMini. You have to use a USB flash drive to run the W8 installation from. Bootcamp for Windows does not install yet (not even in compatibility mode). Downloaded the latest version of Catalyst (11.9 or 11.10 beta) which installed perfectly and allowed me to compensate for underscan on my 27" screen. Only one hardware driver has not loaded "SMBUS", does not seem to affect anything. Other than that, it's perfect 🙂

Extremely stable beta. It has not crashed once.

Apple, please make Bootcamp for Windows compatible to W8 🙂

I have just installed Windows 8 DP using Boot Camp.

Installed it the same way as Windows 7. I already had the Boot Camp drivers from a previous Windows 7 installation. All I did was run the Boot Camp setup.exe on the Boot Camp CD using Windows 7 compatibiity mode, and all my drivers were installed.

Boot Camp will only officially support Windows 8 when its released.

It's a DEVELOPMENT PREVIEW, meant for DEVELOPERS. It's not meant to be used as a primary OS just yet. Wait for the Beta/RC stage before writing it off. I originally installed it using VirtualBox but it ran really really slowly, so I just decided to install it using Boot Camp (which was very simple), and now its works.

I for one quite like it. It runs much quicker on my 13" MBP Core i5 than Windows 7 did, and the new start page is quite nice. Shame I can't use my trackpad gestures on it, as that would ne neat! 🙂
