Sorry about this - I have only had X since yesterday - Have been using FCP for 10 years though.
I cannot get so effects to instal - can someone please help me with the basics.

You can not use FCP plugins with FCPX
I wasn't trying to do that - its ok - i opened the contents of FCPX and put my new FCPX effect into the relivent folder and that seemed to do the trick.

FCPX should install all plugins automatically (an additional download). But unusual ways works to 🙂
Don't install them inside the application bundle! They'll be removed when you update FCPX.
Motion templates should be installed to ~/Movies/Motion Templates/(category name). This post has a screenshot of the proper directory structure: http://alex4d.wordpress.com/2011/07/10/fcpx-effect-4-up/
FxPlugs should be installed in ~/Library/Plug-Ins/FxPlug or /Library/Plug-Ins/FxPlug.
Is this for Lion? I don't even show a Plug-Ins folder of any kind in the Library.
I couldnt find a folder in Lion either

Do this: If the effect has no installer. Make a folder with the name for example: "my plugins" inside the folder -Motion templates - Effects. Drag the effect folder you have downloaded and put it it there.
how do i install plugins? FCPX ( sorry sounds basic )
