gmail icon on desktop

I am sorry, I don't know how to explain this question well. At the bottom of computer screen, there are many icons for different application. I used to have e-mail icon at the bottom, right side of my computer screen and I no longer see them. So, if I want to check my email, I have to open Safari and push the button for g-mail to open up. I hope I explain my problem better this time.
