Change spellchecker language, not keyboard
On an iPad can one change the spell checker language, independantly of the keyboard layout? This is particularly relevant if using a Bluetooth keyboard (as the mapping cannot be changed).
iOS 4

No, it follows the language setting for the on-screen keyboard. After choosing that, you then choose the setting for hardware keyboard that is appropriate for your bluetooth device. What exactly are you trying to do?
Thank you for replying, Tom.
I am using an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard with French layout and wish to type in English. The problem is that if I select "French" as the keyboard layout then, the spell checking is in French (and means auto-correction makes for a French word being entered) or, by selecting "English" as the keyboard layout then the spell checking is in English but the keys are not mapped the same way. This means, fir example, that hitting the "y" key on the Bluetooth keyboard will enter a "z" onto the iPad.
Thank you for your help.
If you look more closely at the keyboard options in Settings (tap English for example), you should see that under Engllsh/Hardware you have the option of choosing among us, dvorak, us international-pc, us extended, british, french, german, spanish-iso, italian, dutch, belgian. Also for the on-screen keyboard you can choose among qwerty, azerty, qwertz.
Tom... thank you. I don't know how I missed that but, I did.
Things are going to be so much easier thanks to your help.
Thank you again😊
