Excel repair for Mac

I tried all of these recommendations to no avail. I even went as far as to buy a file repair application (it just crashed repeated). In the end I found that I could open my Excel file in Numbers! I then exported from Numbers back to Excel and voila! Problem solved!

I had the same problem and could not find the answer in this conversation.

I launched Excel,

Open a blank new file.

I set the recalculation option in Excel to Manual in the Tools Menu, OPtions, Calculation tab.

Went in the OPen file Menu and OPened my the File I could not open before. As it was a .xls file a resaved it as a .xlsx file and it seems to work.

I have experienced the same problem and was wondering if any software can help me fix the issue. I could not find any software that can repair Excel file on the Mac so I copied the file on Windows and tried demo version of a software. That works up to an extent, but could not recover the formatting.

Then one of my friends suggested me Mac Excel Recovery software from Stellar. It worked like a charm. The software is all i wanted as i face Excel corruption issue very frequently.

This is an excellent tip, and saved me several hours of rework. I had a largish file with some tangly formulas with indirect, dcount/dstdev, averageif, and some array formulas and it stopped opening. Excel would crash with a EXCBADACCESS every time, on multiple machines and the most recent backup that would open meant losing several hours work. After opening it with auto-calculation turned off and saving it and turning auto-calc back on, it stopped crashing Excel on open.

How to Restore a Lost Excel Spreadsheet

Damaged File

1. Log on to your computer and open Microsoft Excel. Click on the "File" menu.

2. Choose "Open" from the list. Browse to the damaged file and highlight it.

3. Click on the small drop-down arrow at the right side of the "Open" button. Choose the "Open and Repair" option. Choose "Repair" to have Excel attempt to recover the damaged file. Choose "Extract data" to extract the information in the spreadsheet to another file.

4. Save the recovered spreadsheet to your hard drive or network share. Save a backup copy of the spreadsheet as well.

Lost File

5. Search your hard drive for the file. It is not uncommon to save an Excel spreadsheet to the wrong location by mistake. Click on the "Start" menu and choose "Search" from the list.

6. Choose the "All files and folders" option and type ".xls" in the search box. This will find all Excel spreadsheets on your computer, whether they were created in Excel 2007 or an earlier version. Click "OK" to start the search.

Marifilps364, the instructions you provided are for the Windows version of Excel running on Microsoft Windows. The software you linked to is for Windows only. Useful information but not applicable to Macs.

This post has some long legs. First post was in 2011.

I followed the suggestion to send the file to a Windows system. Then I changed the extension .xlsx to .xls on Explorer, and proceeded to open the file on Excel. I byassed any warnings to proceed as such, and Excel was able to open the file. I then saved the file as .xlsx, and sent it back to the Mac system.

Finally! I tried repairing Disk permissions in Diskutility.app. I tried turning off auto calculations in Excel. I tried saving as a new file format. I tried opening read only. I downloaded Stellar Phoenix excel repair - it seems to be doing something but it literally does one cell at a time and takes about 3-5 seconds per CELL. I had 23 tabs with a lot of data. Maybe by Christmas I can open it. I even went to a site linked here on the Apple support site that was an online repair solution but when it wasn't clear it was a legit company and when I read the legal terms and it said I am willing to abide by the laws of Russia... I didn't trust sending my confidential doc out to that hosted service. Who knows...

So it is ironic that Numbers is the fix. Now it didn't import my conditional formatting and I see some key formulas that aren't working now (value was pasted in), but overall it seems to be successful. Thanks!!

Time Machine keeps older versions, not just the most recent.

A good first thing to do is Permissions Repair in Disk Utility.app

I had similar issues - DLL error no matter what I tried. I had previously installed a 2nd copy of excel - and for some reason this worked.
