Restore iPhone from older backup

Hello,

Let me start out by saying thank you for viewing and I hope you can help! I have searched support and haven't found anything that has helped.

Last night I did a normal backup and sync with no problems. Today I noticed that I lost all of my text messages. I don't think it was from when I synced, I actually tried to send a mms and I don't ever remember it going through. In support I have read that people sending mms have had the the screen go white and the text mesages disappear.

I also read that I can restore from a backup. I tried that and no luck, the text messages that were listed only showed 2 from last night and none from this morning so I know that the backup worked but the last backup must have been after this issue happened. What I need is the backup BEFORE last nights. I would much rather lose a couple weeks of text verses 3 years of text.

I wish it was as simple as "select the next one in the list" but it's not. The other file names listed are my husbands iPhone and 4 other files that all have dates of 2009 and older. I sync at least once a month. Where are they and I how do I restore to one from at least this year?

Please help!

Thanks

Every backup replaces the old one, exept those backups you use to restore your phone from, these are marked with a time stamp and will not be replaced by iTunes.

The only hope would be, if you included the iphone backup folder into your computer backup routine and would be able to restore that folder again. After that your old backup would be present in the list again.

More info about the location of that folder for your computer and how to do this can be found here: iPhone and iPod touch: About backups

I've found a previous back up which isn't appearing on iTunes and I don't know how to make it appear in iTunes.

Since, the latest update wiped my phone, so I've only got the back up from the date that I updated the phone and it wiped everything. I've looked on the app data folder for iTunes - and it's sitting there but iTunes doesn't seem to see it. That back up has everything before the updates swiped the iPhone.

If anyone can help me, please do - I'd really like to have my iPhone restored to what it was before the recent iOS update.

ineedhelpwithiphone,

Have you had any luck with trying to restore your older backup? I too had a similar problem. I can see older backup folders on my computer but iTunes is only recognizing the most recent one. I considered dragging all of the files within one of the older backup folders into the folder that I think iTunes is mapped to and seeing what happens.

I've tried restoring from old back-ups, they don't help me.

Did thie "moving thing" work for you? Also, I'm probably asking a stupid question but what do you mean by "mapped?"

So you mean, that I should move it into one of the recent back-ups, which alreayd appear on iTunes, or make a new back up and then move the files? Do you think I should just move them or copy them into the folder? I'm thinking of copying them...

Right now, you're making my day by giving me another option of how to get my old stuff back 🙂

Please let me know,

I did not try the moving thing option yet. All of this happened to me Sunday night and I had to take a break from trying to fix it.

What I mean by mapped is regarding the multiple time stamped back up folders. For some reason iTunes is ignoring all of them except for the most recent one. The key is figuring out how to point iTunes to one of the folders previous to the most recent one.

From what I have seen from other posts on the forum regarding this issue those older backups cannot be restored. I wish you luck. If I figure it out I will be sure to post my solution here.

I am going to try it this weekend at the latest. It says you can recover notes, contacts, pictures. It doesn't say anything about the data from other types of apps like games. Did it not recover anything?

Well, how did it work out for you over the weekend? Did you recover your lost data? Like I said before, for me it didn't work at all. Don't know why, but I wish it did work and then I'd be able to have everything back, but I guess not. I'm going to have to keep on trying 🙂 I don't mind not recovering apps and games - since I'll just be able to download them all again, not a problem. I just want everything else back e.g. notes, pictures, contacts, etc.

this blog tutorial I found through google search suggests it is actually possible to recover WITHOUT BACKUP. I have got good past experiences with that particular website, but i don't know if they're compatible with your phone, anyways, do check them out and other similar ones, if your data is important to you.

FINALLY I THINK I GOT IT!!!

This is my first post and I have been looking around for ages on how to restore an older backup using iTunes 11.

So this is what I ended up doing (after about 3 hours of trying every single forum post and google search, after trying to revert to an older version of itunes and having so many problems with .itl file etc)

So I completely uninstalled and reinstalled my iTunes from fresh, said no thanks to the tutorial and let it make a backup of my iPhone.

After this found my old backup and copied it to the Users/Appdata/Apple Computer/Mobilesync/backup folder and deleted the backup I had just made.
Then I right clicked on my iPhone device on the left hand side column (which was added through the options somewhere) and went with the restore from backup option.
This then found my backup that I had copied across into the mobilesync/backup folder and restored to a previous date.
******WHEN YOU COPY ACROSS THE BACKUP MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THE WHOLE FOLDER NOT JUST THE LATEST FILE********
I hope this helps (itunes 11 *****)

Sorry, just wondering if anyone here in this board can help.

I have a different issue.

My hubby's iphone last backup was mid July 2013.

Due to the mysterious disappearing act of contact names, I thought of using the manual backup of the mid-July 2013 copy to restore.

Big mistake.

Now, all his data on the phone (including contacts, photos, whatsapp messages etc.) all have a gap of 2 mths until today.

In the device backup, he sees one that says:

8 Sep 2013 11.59PM but it has a further extension that says 9 July 2013 9.16pm

In his pc directory, he sees 2 folders ....mobilesync\backup\

One folder dated 9 July 2013

Another dated 8 Sep 2103

However, when he moves the 9 July folder outside of the above directory, then in

iTunes>Preferences(under the edit men in Windows>Devices

It shows there is no backup -- even though in the above directory, the 8 Sep 2013 folder is there.

So we are at a loss as we can't figure out which way to go from here.

Any ideas anyone?

thanks in advance,

Em
