Magic Mouse stopped scrolling and gestures in lion

When I first installed Lion my magic mouse worked just fine. During the first few weeks the mouse was switched back and forth between the magic mouse and mighty mouse and now when trying to use the Magic Mouse, I can't scroll up, down, horizontally or use any of the gestures. I've checked preferences and reset the SMC as well as the PRAM. I've restarted in Safe Mode and still does not work. One thing I have noticed is now when going to the Mouse preferences, I don't see the gestures example showing the different ways to use the magic mouse. It show's the mighty mouse settings, but when I disconnect the mighty mouse from the keyboard and use the magic mouse, I can move the mouse around, click on things but just can't scroll at all.

Please if anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. It's very frustrating not being able to utilize the mouse and gestures.

Thanks,

Darren

So when you upgraded to those operating systems have you tried creating a brand new user account and then see if the Magic Mouse works? I know after I reformatted my drive and created a brand new user everything worked and have not had the problem occur again. If you upgraded through 4 OS's and the problem still is there and you hadn't created a new user then that tells me it has something to do with your user account. By creating a new user everything is brand new, not pulling any settings from an existing account. I would try that and see if it worked.

I can tell you from experience that by carrying over an existing user account can definitely affect the way the system performs. Can't hurt. Good luck.

I understand what you're saying about an extreme measure to take. No one likes to waste time reformatting, reinstalling, etc just for a mouse. Believe me, I was going nuts dealing with that issue and frustrated knowing that you pay for something that is suppose to work and able to use the gestures and it doesn't perform. But like I told someone else that is having the same problem, sometimes when reformatting/reinstalling wipes out any corrupted settings/preferences which is preventing the mouse to work properly.

Try creating a brand new user account? That's how I fixed mine and other issues. I had used my original user account for several years and had gone through different OS upgrades keeping the same user but the problem persist up until I created a new user. Once I did that all problems went away plus, I noticed that my performance was greatly improved too. With several years if installing software, adding files, applications crashing it all starts to accumulate and never get's cleaned so when upgrading the OS, all those issues are still there and then when you start running into problems, people start blamming the OS.

One other suggest if I may, run disk utility and repair permissions. If errors show up, keep repairing them until they go away. Doing this on a monthly bases will also help your system perform better.

It's just my thoughts but if you have coped with the issues and have moved on then you have settled with the issue. 😀

I fixed the problem. In short, I think some items for my Wacom Bamboo were lurking and messing up the works.

Installing a bare Mountain Lion worked. But transferring accounts and software from the old drive brought the problem back.

I then solved the problem by scrubbing every folder and file with the name Wacom in it somewhere. You can't just delete Wacom's software, that leaves the extensions in place. Wacom also doesn't seem to have an uninstaller. It's possible I forgot to check for an uninstaller when I deleted the Wacom items from my Applications folder.

You might find:

/Library/Application Support/Wacom/ (delete folder)

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/WacomNetscapePlugin.plugin (delete this)

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/WacomTabletPlugin.plugin (delete this)

In the terminal, I used:

sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb (this will take several minutes)

locate Wacom (lists all files on computer with Wacom in the name)

The above commands will show me everything with Wacom in the name and I used that listing to root out all such files.

I also uninstalled USB Overdrive using the uninstaller found in the Applications/Utilities folder.

I would use similar methods for any mouse or tablet input modifier or driver you might have used.

Now my Apple Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad work properly and the settings and animations work in the System Preferences now.

I think this means that I can't have a Wacom Tablet and Magic Trackpad on the same computer. I will experiment further with cloned drives.
