2x DVD write speed with Toast Titanium 7

It is the particular media. I run into the same thing regularly.

Burning can really be picky, with the software, media, and drive all contributing to the decision of what speed you can burn at. I need to get some new disks myself because my current ones, Toast only wants to burn at 2x even though they are 8x disks. 😟

I tried to burn a dmg file using disk utilities and it said max speed 2X..

I was just about to ask, whether burning DVDs has improved with the new Intel Macs, yet it seems like I don't even have to.

I'm currently having a terrible time burning some disks with our iMac 17" 2.0 G5. Went to an Apple dealer, asked two sales guys at least twice to confirm the media I'm buying will burn at full speed, - only to get 2x max!!!

Took about 2h to burn 3 DVDs (data) incl. verifying. The forth one stopped at 9% and so did the next two attempts, leaving me with 3 useful DVDs and 3 garbage ones. Furthermore, I couldn't even cancel the process and eject the disks without restarting the computer. Force quitting Finder had no effect and the (already useless) disk wouldn't show up in Disk Utility either.

And Intel iMacs seem to be just as picky about 8x DVDs as any other Mac.

I'm having the same issue with my 20" duo core imac. what media are you using? and what media have you used that yielded faster speeds?

I'm using memorex printable 8x dvds... and the NEC dvd burner I have in my G4 burns them at the full 8x. the matshita drive that came with my new imac is turning out to be a piece of matshita. >=(

i have the exact same problem on my sisters new imac

my external burner (NEC) recognizes it just fine and burns at 8x.... it looks like it's the drive that's causing the problem

i get the same hang up problem when i cant force quit and must hard reset as well

it is incredible that apple distributes brand new iMac intel with a so slow burner !! and what is about this known problem ? since october 2005 - refer to the link to understand.

I will engage the warranty on bot iMac I bought for 2 weeks !!

I ran some tests using Toast 7.0.2 under the PPC and the Intel machines and found :

Memorex 16X DVD -R will only burn at 2X
Memorex 16X DVD +R will burn at 8X

I should say the write speeds listed were for the iMac core duo 1.83 17"

I can confirm that a Sony DVD+RW (Accucore 4.7Gb) rated at 1x-4x will only write at 2x using the Apple normal burning software.

I also see sometimes the blank DVD disappeared from the desktop, but it still wrote and completed normally.
