Cannot send mail after upgrading to Lion

Can anyone help.

I upgraded to OS X Lion, and since then I cannot send mail from any of my accounts.

Nothing wrong with them. I can access, receive and send with othe Mail programs, as well as from my iPhone and iPad.

I have deleted, and reconfigured my accounts, and no luck.

Mac OS X (10.0.x)

Jeffrey:

Thanks a lot for your advise.

I will delete all accounts, including MobileMe, quit Mail App, force quit Mail, and readd my POP accounts with Mail closed, and. If needed, edit the server and change to port 587 (if needed).

I hope it works! I'll keep you all posted.

If I get an error message, I will copy and paste it here.

Tried all of the above and I still can't send mail with Mail (5).

So I deleted the Mail.app account and downloaded and installed Thunderbird.

Entered my username and password and it all worked straight away, including send.

So I went back and set up the Mail app account and tried it but its still wouldn't send mails.

I think that I will just give up and use Thunderbird.

I've been following the posts about the inability to send with Mail on Lion using Mobileme. I deleted the MM account as per instructions. Force quit Mail. Let it repopulate. But when I tried to send, it still it does not connect to the utgoing smtp server. It invites me to select another smtp, then spins and gives up.

I have another account that is not mobileme, but an old POP account. Could it be confusing the two? So far this thread is the closest to resolving my problem, but it hasn't done it yet. Would a Mac Genius figure it out?

I spoke too soon...

It did work immediately after following the steps of jeffrey512.

And then immediately didn't work afterwards.

Each time, I can get outgoing mail to work once by following these steps, and then it fails after.

Since it takes so long to re-cache or re-sync the mailboxes, this is a poor solution.

I don't know why this would happen; I cannot even imagine a mechanism where the settings would change themselves. I am now officially frustrated.

Thanks Jeffrey. I did select my mobileme account when prompted, and yes, eventually it was sent, after about 5 minutes of spinning i circles. But here's the wierdest thing. It only sends test emails that I send myself. But when I sent an actual email to someone else, I get the same dialogue box telling me it can't connect to the smpt server. No matter what I click, it refuses. So my only option now has been to import all my emails from my gmail account. And sending with Gamil works everytime. So from the above message from NLKapple, it looks like this miught be a temporary system failure at Apple. Ever seen that at Gmail?

Jeffrey's solution worked for me also... momentarily, then I got the same problem as EricN identfies. I can send messages to myself but not to anyone else...My problem was also that the spinning i circles never stopped...after an hour I just closed the window.

This has happened within the last 2-3 days... Apple has to be doing something about this, I don't think it has anything to do with my Lion update.

Now, all of a sudden I can send emails again, both to myself, and others. It took all morning to get it to work.. But the problem was not with my settings or my computer. It was a Apple problem, from the Mobile me site, in which the whole system went down. That actually pleases me, because I know if it happens again, I'll just have to wait it out, and use Gmail.. No need to fiddle endlessly with settigns.

Hey guys:

Thanks a lot for your posts.

I have learned a lot, and recognize you have been very helpful, with very smart advise.

Jeffrey512 has been specially involved with us all. His ideas were the ones that got Mail.app working with my MobileMe account.

I had no luck with my POP accounts, and have concluded that the problem is not Lion, but the new version of Mail.app that comes with it.

I have tried everything for 2 weeks (10 days on this discussion) and, I decided to give up.

I followed DG4444's advise, and downoladed Thunderbird. I should have done that from day one. No problem receiving, nor sending.

So I will use Thunderbird for my POP accounts, Mail.app for my MobileMe account, and wait and see what the future holds for us.

By the way, MobileMe was down last night, so that may explain EricN's comments.

Again, thanks a lot.
