Time Machine periodically can't find backup disk

I have a new 4th gen TC. For the most part it runs fine, wifi good, backing up as expected. But periodically, at least once a day, it reports, Backup Delayed, Can't find backup disc. If I then manually connect to Time Capsule through the Finder, TM then seems to connect just fine, but within a day, same problem. (Running Lion, all software and firmware is up-to-date).

Any ideas how to make this annoying little feature go away?

I am having the exact same problem. This has only begun to happen in the past two weeks. I replaced my Time Capsule with a new one and copied the data over to it. Everything worked fine for a week or so and now sometimes it finds the disk other times not.

I tried verifying and repaitring permissions, but it said everything was fine, but the problem still persists.

Any ideas?

Did you manage to solve this problem? I have exactly the same problem. After several extended conversations with Apple Care support they finally replaced my Time Capsule, thinking it was a hardware problem. Not long after I upgraded to a new MacBook Pro. So now I have a new laptop and a new Time Capsule and the problem has reappeared. It's driving me crazy. The backup works fine for a few days then the program fails to find the backup disk. It takes ages to set it all up again from scratch. If anyone has a solution I'd be delighted.

There is a bug for sure.

The need to reboot every few days is actually doing well.. for some people it is multiple times per day.

If the TC is on the latest firmware.. it is not super good .. go back to 7.6.1

You should not have to reset the TC..

Just restart it.. ie pull the power .. count to 10.. plug power in.

If that is not enough.. do a full network restart.. modem .. TC.. network clients. 2min gap.

Tell us if that isn't enough.

Also what is the network setup??

TC is main router or bridged?

Issue is wireless or wired connections as well?

Yes, the rebooting seems to help, although one wouldn't exactly say it solves the problem, as the symptoms reappear!

Also since updating the firmware, a new problem seems to pop up every so often - everything looks fine, light is green, wifi indicator on devices is on, but no Internet access and TC doesn't appear in Airport Utility. Rebooting TC brings it back online.

plain vanilla network - cable modem, TC as router, extended with airport express, time machine looking for disk wirelessly. Although this new issue with no Internet access and not being recognized is a problem for both wireless and wired.

On extended network.. the other thread strongly suggests too many issues with 7.6.3.. some people seem to resolve it by jumping through a series of hoops but it appears to offer almost nothing useful.

So go back to 7.6.1 (if not to 7.5.2 which IMHO is even better).

To help with the problem .. AFAIK there is no work around yet.. and no bug fix in the latest firmware.. rather additional new ones. But these might help things work better.

On the TC.. Factory reset to get rid of all settings. Start over.

I would strongly recommend this.. at least. Factory reset does not do anything to data on the disk.

Set all SMB names. ie TC name.. eg TC

wireless 2.4ghz.. TC24ghz

wireless 5ghz TC5ghz (use different name to control what is doing what).

Hard disk share name. Data (some TC use names with spaces.. don't!!)

Fix the wireless channels. For 2.4ghz there are only 3 non-overlapping.. 1, 6, 11.. test them in reverse order as 11 or 13 in ETSI regions are less used.

Use only WPA2 Personal security. Especially for extended wireless. Use password 8-12 character pure alphanumeric.

I recommend you set dhcp lease time shorter.. 20min will not increase network traffic to any significant degree but keeps everything updated.

Default is one day.. things get lost over that time with computers and network shutting down, sleeping etc.

Once you have done the TC setup then do the Express to extend again.

Tell us how it goes.
