Epson scan under Lion with image capture

The first scan I made with image capture at 150dpi appeared usable.

However the letter scanned was no longer white but slightly green and pink and the file size was at 3,8Meg!

A pdf at 150dpi for an A4 : 3,8M

A jpg at 150dpi for an A4 : 549Kb

A pdf at 96dpi for an A4 : 1,5M

A jpg at 96dpi for an A4 : 209Kb

With the Epson Scanner Software I had good rendering and an A4 page was around 100 and 200Kb in jpg or pdf.

What’s going on! The new software caused a 1800% increase in the file size!

I am stuck with my scanner and papers.

The image correction is limited.

The pdf files created are enormous.

There is no way we want to work and start to store this files!

A quick solution is needed to correct the situation.

Hi, Daniel

The system is OK.

The scanner is in Sys Prefs, the drivers and sofware are checked and up to date everyday.

The problem; if it is clearly identified as so under Lion; is somewhere else.

Would you be kind enough to check what is the size of an A4 pdf at 150dpi under your system done with Image Capture (without any other corrective software)?

Thanks

regards

I just tried a sampel scan at 150 dpi and found similar results to yours. My scanner is an Epson Perfection 34990 Photo. Luckily, I can still run Epson Scan for my scanner under Lion. There are indeed quite significant file size differences.

I also tried Image Capture under Snow Leopard. The scanned file sizes were similar to those for Lion. It is not Lion that is causing the large file sizes then.

The best I can offer you is a suggestion that you file a report with Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html. You may also want to contact Epson about the matter.

Thank's Matt,

You are confirming what I have read in other posted problems concerning pdf size.

"The problem", the size of a pdf:

- is present with Snow Leopard and Lion, and perhaps other OS

- is not linked to a scanner brand

- is revealed when you create a pdf through Image Capture and whatever software redirecting you to it

- is not limited to a scan, a simple file conversion results in the same issue (500kb jpg-->3.1MB pdf)

- isn't obvious if you've never used an other system or "pdf creator".

A sudden increase in file size by around 2000% is a problem!

in disk space

backup

price of your data on a server

slow your system, usage...

A 10 years old Epson software doing a better job than a brand new OS is a shock!

First, let me say I understand your issues and can empathise with them. On reflection, however, the file size problem you are experiencing with Image Capture is not really new or unique to Image Capture. The Apple forums are filled with users complaining about the huge file sizes the Save as PDF… creates with Word and other programs. The Epson Scan software is doing something different--for good or bad--than the Apple supplied software.

Keep in mind that you are still using a 10 year old scanner with Lion. That in and of itself is quite amazing. You obviously are not using a 10 year old computer and I would be very surprised if you are using 10 year old hard disks for storage.

Perhaps you should try third party scanner software such as VueScan or keep an older computer around for scanning purposes that can run the Epson software. If neither of these is a workable solution, perhaps it is time to look at getting a new scanner. You would almost certainly get faster scans with improved resolution and a scan file size that is closer to what the 10 year old Epson software produces.

A bit of history taken from Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_%28software%29

"

Rosetta is a dynamic binary translator for Mac OS X which allows many PowerPC applications to run on certain Intel-based Macintosh computers without modification. Apple released Rosetta in 2006 when it transitioned the Macintosh platform from the PowerPC to Intel processor microarchitecture. The name "Rosetta" is a reference to the Rosetta Stone, the discovery of which made it possible to comprehend and translate Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Rosetta is based on QuickTransit technology.[1] It has no graphical user interface, which led Apple to describe Rosetta as "the most amazing software you'll never see."[2]

Rosetta was initially included with Mac OS X v10.4.4 "Tiger", the version that was released with the first Intel-based Macintosh models.[3]

Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard" does not include Rosetta by default but retains an option in the installer for the user to include it. It can also be automatically installed by the system if needed at a later time.

Mac OS X v10.7 "Lion" neither includes nor supports Rosetta at all. Therefore, with Lion, the current Macintosh platform drops support for PowerPC applications.

" WIKIPEDIA.

The discs wich came with a scan are mainlly PowerPC.

Epson no more do Scan software, driver yes to be used by Image Capture or other.

They are all the same, want to sell hardware not software.

For me, To stay at a reasonable file size limit, I do clear choice between what will be B&W and color.

In Image Capture : the Black and White can be treated directly in PDF, using:

- Image correction :

- Contrast to full

- Brightness one step

With color I have quite no choice, JPEG:

- Image correction

- Brightness +3

After in a viewer I do a color autolevel.

If I want it in PDF, save in PDF and finally apply a "in house" Filter from ColorSync Utility.

I don't use the built in "reduce file size", it's too extrem and the results are very poor.

I use Image Capture in Lion all the time for scanning with my Epson Artisan 810. A TIP:

Be sure you select KIND: A-TEXT and then you can select 300 dpi.

A sample PDF scan at these settings for A4 was only 127 KB! While I could not scan directly to JPG, using Preview to EXPORT this PDF to JPG resulted in a file size of only 443 KB!

I think you are using the Black & White or Color settings which WILL substantially increase file size and are ONLY needed if you have graphics in your letters. Without graphics, ALWAYS use the A-TEXT setting and 300 dpi.
