Logic Pro 8 Upgrade to 9

I just recently purchased a brand new iMac which obviously comes with Lion already installed. I have purchased and been using Logic Pro Studio 8 on my MacBook Pro for a while now and have found that Logic 8 wont work with the new operating system. This in itself is a little upsetting but does this also means I am unable to purchase the upgrade for logic studio 9 and have to purchase the full studio version of logic 9? Making my logic 8 full studio pretty much useless for future endevours... If there is an answer to this someone else in these forums, I apologize, someone re-direct me if so.

Hope someone can help 🙂

Not so fast. I just had this dilemma last night. I upgraded to Lion on my iMac. Launched Logic Pro 8, got the error message that it didn't work. An Apple KnowledgeBase Article suggested trashing Logic 8 from the Applications Folder and reinstalling. Way wrong! The installer that came with Logic Pro 8 is PowerPC Based (runs on Intel in Rosetta), which Lion no longer supports, SO YOU CAN'T REINSTALL LOGIC PRO 8 IN LION. I called local apple store, their genius folks confirmed this, and told me that the upgrade to Logic Pro 9 would not install without a current copy of Logic 8 on the drive.

I was lucky, though. I went into Time Machine, and then restored my apps folder to the previous backup with Logic Pro 8 in it, bought the upgrade, and installed it. When I installed it, it did look for "items on my computer" to determine whether I was eligible for the upgrade install. Finding it, it installed. The Apple Store guy suggested calling Apple, explain your situation, and ask them for an upgrade code that will let you upgrade without the full version CD, or give you the full version CD withough the price.

Here's my dilemma now. What if my HD crashes? Apparently, I can't just install Lion, or I'll be in the same position as the OP. Same thing if I buy a new Mac, which I intend to do in fairly short order. At that point, I won't be able to install Logic Pro 8, then upgrade to 9. I am not sure what the answer is, but Apple needs to fix this hole.

Hi HunterOh9,

As Already Stated, you only need to buy the Upgrade to Logic Pro 9...

When you Install it, make sure you have the Serial Number for Logic 8 handy, for when you are asked for it...

After the Successful Install... Run Software Update and Update to the Latest Version of Logic 9...

Or go Here and Download it direct...

Cheers,

(After all this.. It would probably be advisable to do a Permissions Repair using Disc Utility... Followed by a Restart ...)

I have just tried to install Logic Pro 8 on my brand new Macbook Pro which came with 10.7.2 and was greeted with a message saying that it 'no longer supports PowerPC applications'.

I have used the call-back service on my Apple Protection Plan but as its Christmas i will have to wait until Monday to get any answers. Hopefully they will be willing to do some sort of deal to provide me with Logic Pro 9 for next to nothing - In the UK they appear to have discontineud the upgrade option and only sell the full version that weighs in at over £400!

If anyone from Apple is reading this: I hope you are going to sort out this issue so the many users of older versions of Logic, who have shelled out large amounts of money on new Apple computers, will not be put out of pocket and left with no music software.

Ok here it is, I had the same problem. This is what I did, I got out my snow leopard disk out and install Rosetta on my lion OS. It does work although apple saids it doesn't. Then I installed my Logic 8.0.2. And that was it. This should work for you.

But if you have Protools on this same computer you need to follow these steps if you get a error messages that saids DAE need 25Mb of memory.

Go to Mac. HD-Library-Framework and send DAE to the Trash. STOP THERE.

Now open Logic, go to Preferences-Audio and uncheck the enable box. Quite logic open trash then drag and drop the DAE file back in the framework folder. It may ask you to Authenticate it. Just click on Authenticate. And it done. If this works for you please give me some feed back. Thanks Gregg A.
