I am using a 2011 15" MBP with the new TB Display. Clamshell mode works well and it's what I ultimatelly wanted,...but the MBP is getting VERY hot and the fan is spinning at maximum capacity.
I realize that the fan is doing it's job, but the LCD on the MBP is very warm. This cant be good for the longevity of the MBP.
Is anyone using Clamshell Mode? Any suggestions? Thx.

With the 15" MBP Late 2011 2.5Ghz in a vertical Bookarc connected to a TD, the fans only comes on when playing video or heavy drive access, which is solid state drive. Not sure if the fans are at full speed, as the noise level seems reasonably low. I'll need to get iStat to check the temperature.
what program are you using to get the information of the cpu temp and fan activity?

That is iStat Pro.
Mine does the same MBP connected to a monitor. Running vmware fusion, and it lives at 70-80c all day long. I think it's designed like this. Intel chips run hot.
same problem for me. Clamshell mode with TB display: browsing youtube or just generally can cause fan's to become noisy and distracting.
