Can't break apart compound clip.

It's my understanding that a compound clip can be restored to its component parts by Clip > Break Apart Clip Items. This item is dimmed for me when I select (highlight) a compound clip in my current project. The compound clip has been retimed: would that affect things? Need to restore this compound clip to the clips which comprise it.
