Chirping noise coming from iPad 2

Just recently I have noticed that my iPad 2 is emitting a fairly loud chirping noise. Sounds like a bird or crickett. The sound is emitted in two discreet bursts. You can easily hear it across a fair sized room. It is unlike the high chirping noise I have read about, and heard, on the iphone which is a more prolonged single high pitched noise. I know the noise occurs when the iPad is not plugged in to its AC adaptor but is sufficiently charged. It may also occur when plugged in. Not sure. The noise is very internmittent and is not predictable. For example... it does not happen everytime I use a certain app or enter my password.

Chris, Excellent suggestion.

BTW, I actually brought up this Chirping behavior in my AP Physics class today as trying to track down an explanation for the Chirping involves many investigative tools used by scientists. It was actually quite amazing how "into it" the kids were. One student suggested that I remove 5 apps at once to shrink down the time to find the offending app...if indeed it is an app. Then another student suggested I remove one Folder of apps at a time as a Folder has apps of similar natures. For example, remove the Folder that has all my Clock/Timing apps as it is a more likely suspect. (I actually tried removing that particular folder and the chirping continued.) But, still...out of the darkness of this Chirping confusion has come some quality opportunities for my students to practice the scientific method.

Hi Greg,

Praise the Lord! So, I am not crazy...at least with regard to the chirping noise. 😁

As I have mentioned earlier, I have more apps than I've had hot dinners in my life as I am an "app tester" at my school. However, it might expedite the search process if I shared the apps I have downloaded most recently. I don't mind listing those apps here as I am a pretty vanilla type guy and the apps are far from controversial. Hm...I wonder if I should be concerned for security reasons. Can't see why, but maybe I should ask this thread's Grand Masters...many of whom have earned over 2.76 x 10^5 points for their helpful expertise. These guys are my Peeps and I trust their opinions.

Dear Grand Masters, Is there any reason relating to security that should concern me regarding listing apps I have downloaded? Thank You

Let's wait for a response from one of the experts. That will also give me time to compile that list of recently downloaded apps.

I'll tell you one thing. If we find the offending app, its developer is in a ton of trouble. Sorta reminds me of that line from the movie, "Taken" starring Liam Neeson.

"If it's money you want for fixing your defective crap app, I can tell you I have none. But, what I do have is a special set of skills. Skills I have developed over a lifetime. Skills that make me a nightmare for developers like you. If you fix the app now, I will not look for you. That will be the end of it. But if you do not fix the app, I WILL look for you. I WILL find you. And when I do, I WILL kill you."

Metaphorically speaking, of course. 😉

You can read this support article for more information about what exactly is contained in the iPad backup.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4079

All of your "non-default" settings are contained in the back - email settings, WiFi settings, app data, bookmarks, notes, calendar events and so on.

If you backup before you restore to factory settings, then restore to that last backup, all of those settings, data, etc. will be restored to the iPad .... but ... if the backup contains whatever data or setting is causing the mysterious chirping sound - you will have restored that problem back onto the iPad anyway.

Dear GSwarthout

Sweet Mother of Pearl!

This is the best Apple Day of my life!

Almu : Alarm with music GOLD is absolutely the culprit. As you said, the settings for that Evil App from Hades include an hour alarm. By default!, the developer/seller (nowApp) has set it to "ON." The developer has also chosen 9 AM to 6 PM (9:00 to 18:00) as default values for the hours. The developer has also chosen "Cricket" as the default psycho sound. For any future readers of this thread, its link to the App Store is:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/almu-alarm-with-music-gold/id463103928?mt=8

Even though, as you say again, it was totally obvious that this is the culprit once you go into the app, I did manually set my time to 4:59 PM after turning the hourly Cricket sound to off. 5:00 PM hit the screen. NO DOUBLE CHICKET CHIRP! This is the guy.

I guess this puts an end to this thread. Hm...I'm feeling kinda sad. 😢

I'm going to miss all my helpful Thread Peeps. Demo 🙂, Chris CA 🙂, paulcb 🙂 and all the others.

Forgive me for perhaps going over the top here, but I want to say something.

I read and particapte in a fair amount of tech forums. I enjoy connecting with people who have the same non-mainstream interests as me. But, on a lot of these forums there is often that troller who is no fun. Their contributions to the threads are not helpful. They are scarcastic and condescending and they bring out the worst in the other forum participants. I don't know why some people feel compelled to behave this way and I don't want to give it a lot of thought. But, I do know this. Our thread had none of this. Everyone tried to be helpful. Everyone was respectful. And even though we all came to this thread with different levels of expertise no one took advantage of that to massage their egos with comments that were disrespectful. Of course, I love that we finally found the solution. I am a physicist turned teacher and I love to solve a puzzle. The nastier the puzzle the better as far as I am concerned. But, I actually enjoyed the helpful, good natured interaction among the participants more. So, thanks to all for being model citizens of this thread. It was a blast

Bye, Mr. Luigi

Hi Heather,

Greg is right. Unfortunately, the app that was causing our problems was Almu:Alarm with Music Gold. The icon used for the app says Holiday Alarm on it. This is the link to that app:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/almu-alarm-with-music-gold/id463103928?mt=8

I only provide this to make double sure you indeed do NOT have this app.

You can make triple sure you don't have this app by going to your home screen and then swiping your fingers across the screen to the RIGHT. This will bring up your Search Screen. Start typing "ALmu..." If you accidentally acquired the app (maybe someone in your house downloaded it on your family iTunes account and it got imported to your iPad via iCloud) the icon for the app will appear. Tap it and your iPad will go to the app wherever it's lurking on your iPad. Then follow Greg's directions for shutting off the alarm.

If that is NOT it, then your DOOMED! 😢 Ah...just kidding. One thing you could do to help diagnose the problem is to check any of your alarm clock apps (of any type) and look for any and all icons on the screen of every one of those apps. Just press all those icons and see if one gets you to settings. You might discover by this trial and error method the offending app and the place in that app to remove the alarm.

Another thing you can try is to manually set the time on your iPad to just before you have heard the alarm in the past and see if it consistently goes off. To do this, click on your Settings app. Click on "General." Click on "Date & Time." Turn off "Set Automatically." You will then see "Set Date & Time." Adjust the dials for a minute or two before you think the alarm will go off. Wait and see if the alarm rings. Repeat this for other times to see if you can determine exactly what is the pattern for the alarms. Is it every hour on the hour? Every hour on the half-hour? Does the alarm go off only for a certain time duration...say 9:00 am to 3:00 pm? The more information you can gather like this the closer you will get to figuring out which app has these alarm settings.

Lastly, I am assuming you are using an iPad. So, Siri is not involved here. I only mention that because for all we know, it may be possible to say to Siri on an iPhone 4S..."Siri, please ring an alarm every half hour on the hour every day from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm." Or something like that! I would imagine you'd remember doing this, however. 🙂

Keep us posted. I know how frustrating this can be.

Best Regards, Mr. Luigi

Hi pauclb, I thought about that too. But when I went to Settings>General>Sounds the ringtone was set to "Piano Riff." The only apps I have set notifications on emit a "ping" sound. Not this double chirping noise. There is a ringtone called "Crickett" or something like that, but it sounds a little different than my chirping sound. The only place I could see where you could actually set the iPad 2 to emit a specific sound was with ringtones (my iPad is 3G enabled). Unless I am missing something I didn't see any user controlled way to change the sound the iPad 2 makes when a new e-mail, notification, or calendar event comes in. As far as I can tell, the noise the iPad makes for those events is that ping noise.

Sep 27, 2011 5:29 PM in response to Demo

Hi Demo! Yeah, no editing functionality. Crazy! Well, I tried out your suggestion, but the sound for calendar alerts is not my chirping noise. The chirping sound is more "shrill and penetrating." But, you just taught me something I didn't know...how to sample all those alert sounds. I really thought you may have had something there as I have the First Class Client App running on my iPad 2 with all notification types on. Recently this app started to support punched through calendars and I thought that maybe my noise was connected to that. Alas, no go. Good luck with your Steelers this year. :-)

This is probably a ridiculous long shot, but I just had my latest double chirping noise performance from my iPad 2 and noticed that the cell strength icon said "searching." Is it possible that 3G capable iPads are set to emit this chirping noise when they lose a cell signal for longer than a preset amount of time? I get terrible AT&T reception where I live. Usually, I can get a weak EDGE signal, but have noticed of late that the best signal strength I can usually get is one little bar...or none at all.

Sep 29, 2011 10:00 AM in response to Mr. Luigi

I don't have the 3G version. I have WiFi only. You do bring up an interesting point. Perhaps that is the reason you get the chirping sound. But someone with a 3G would have to confirm.

We all hate the inability to edit on this site with the iPad. It makes no sense to me. Apple did not build/design this forum site. It is the product of Jive Software (?) or something like that. One would think that they would make sure that this forum is compatible and works fully when using the iPad.

Any time you type the ampersand in a post on this site using the iPad, that symbol shows up. You are doing nothing wrong.

Sep 29, 2011 1:35 PM in response to Mr. Luigi

The Double Crickett noise surfaced again. But, this time I had 2-3 bars showing on the cell signal strength icon. So much for the loss of cell reception alert idea. This noise is described by everyone who hears it as a cricket. However, it is different than the built in Crickett ringtone that comes with the 3G enabled iPad. Two loud, distinct Crickett chirps. I just hope it's not a hardware issue b/c it's going to be a mother bear to diagnose due to its seeming excruciating randomness. My next great hope/idea is that it is a software issue. Hopefully, updating to iOS 5 (SOON!!!!) will remove the offending code. Right now I'm overwhelmed with Crickett Doom. The only way this could get worse is if the Giants lose on Sunday and the Yankees lose in the Divisional Series.

Sep 30, 2011 9:34 AM in response to Mr. Luigi

I'm back. Latest observations...Yesterday I heard the double chirp. Happened to be watching TV and noticed that the cable box said, "6:00 PM." Not "5:59 PM" or "6:01 PM." Exactly 6 PM. Stood by iPad 2 at 7:00 PM. No chirping. So, it wasn't an hourly thing (which is what I was conjecturing). Thought it might be 6, 12, 6, 12, etc. Put the iPad my my bedstand. Went to sleep. Didn't hear anything at midnight. But, I could have be so deeply asleep I didn't hear it. Didn't hear anything at 6:00 AM, but again, could have been sleeping. Was working at my computer at EXACTLY 12 noon just a while ago. Bingo...heard chirping from my iPad 2 in my computer bag. WHAT!? Could this just be a vicious fluke? Or, does this mean something to anyone out there?

I will keep observing to see if the pattern persists. But, I thought this was interesting enough to post.

5 days till the iPhone 5 announcement. 🙂

Adios.

Sep 30, 2011 1:27 PM in response to Mr. Luigi

4:00 pm on the Button. Chirp.

I SWEAR the chirping wasn't every hour on the hour before. Ex. The iPad did NOT chirp at 7pm last night. Hm...it was plugged in to the AC adaptor however. Oh God...another variable.

If I turn off notifications and the chirping goes away that certainly says something. It is an app. Does anyone have a more elegant solution to find the offending app beside deleting one app at a time on my iPad 2 and eventually discovering which app it is?

If the iPad 2 chirps at 5 PM I will turn off all notifications.

Why am I the only one who has ever experienced this issue? If it is an app, am I the only one who ownes that app?

And again, I have no apps running in the background.

Let you know what happens.
