How is it possible that the ipad doesn't support h.264 video? That is like Adobe not supporting Flash. Is there any way around this to player h.264 files on ipads?

I used Handbrake on the PC to compress and export my iPad h.264 videos. Handbrake has a built in 'iPad' export setting so super easy.

What format are these videos to begin with?
You mean you export your videos to h.264 to put onto the iPad.
Just saw your question, but I've done mp4, vob, and mov's. I think Handbrake adds the special formatting and information that the iPad requires.
I found that I see that message from the Vimeo player in an embedded browser (such as in the Twittelator app), but when I open the same page in Safari, a working player is shown.
