If you will be going back and forth from iWork to Office with the same documents (i.e., importing and exporting the same documents several times), you would be better off going with Office.

In Pages, the import/export process will create additional paragraph styles each time. This is what I recall, anyway.

In Numbers, exporting back and forth to Excel creates a mess of the Numbers sheet names and the Excel worksheet names. You don't want to do it more than once because the names grow longer each time.

Keynote to Powerpoint I don't know about.

If you need to go back and forth between iWork and Office then you should definitely buy Office. The conversion process between the two, whilst good, is not perfect and will cause you problems for any but the simplest of documents/spreadsheets/presentations. Usually the problems arise going from iWork to Office as Office doesn't support some of the nicer stuff you can do with Pages/Keynote etc.

Office is not expensive, and can be had in the UK for about £35-£40 with student discount.

I agree that if you will be collaborating on documents with Word users, particularly ones with a lot of formatting, then you will find you want MSWord. Most students don’t do that level of collaboration, which is why I said go with iWorks.

Here are some other reasons to get iWorks. It is a great price when you buy your new Mac, so it is cheap to give it a try. Keynote integrates better with Pages than the MS software. Also, the similarity of commands within the iWork programs make it easier to learn the suite of programs.

I suggest you get iWorks with your new Mac and try it out for a few days. You can always add Office later.
