Thunderbolt Display will not wake up after sleep!!!!!!

It seems like a lot of us are having an issue with the THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY opening after it goes to sleep. I have the display connected to a new mac mini server and I can not get it to wake up after it goes to sleep unless I unplug the power or the thunderbolt cable and then plug it back in.

UPDATE:

I have through support a work around to this issue that seems to work for me until this gets resolved in a software upgrade. They know that there is an issue with the Thunderbolt display with it waking up when the AUTOMATICALLY ADJUST BRIGHTNESS is checked. I have unchecked this in my display settings and I no longer have the issue. I hope this helps everyone - I was very frustrated by this and hope they fix it soon but Id rather live with adjusting the brightness myself than unplugging all the time. I already has to send one Thunderbolt back because it quit working - That was the original monitor that I had when I started this thread. The new monitor had the same issue as the first where it would not wake up so I called support because I was afraid it would break again if I kept pulling the plug to get it to turn on. I HOPE this works for everyone else.

Make sure you are looking in the system Library and not the User folder Library for the files.

And, this is a "me too" post. Mac mini, Mid 2011, 2.5 GHz i5, AMD Radeon 6630M with Thunderbolt display. Occasionally, when the computer goes to sleep, the Apple thunderbolt display will not turn back on. The only "fix" I have found so far is to unplug the TB cable from the mini and reattach it. Was happening on 10.7 and still on 10.9 (skipped 10.8).

In case this helps anyone, I have noticed that there does seem to be a difference between the machine going to sleep on its own and you putting it to sleep.

I use a great little piece of software called Alfred ( http://www.alfredapp.com/ ) and I've set up the F5 key to put my Mac to sleep, and I hit that key everytime I unplug it or before I plug it in to the TBD. (There are other shortcuts you could use - see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1343 )

It does seem to make a difference when it comes to waking it up.

Has anyone tried having their logic board battery replaced? Apple suggests doing that if a NVRAM and PRAM reset doesn't work. You all seem to have glossed over this fact. I'm thinking of taking my macbook pro 2011 in to have this done.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

"If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board."

My setup has been a MacBook Pro Retina with two daisy chained Thunderbolt Displays.

  • The firmware of #1: Firmware Version: 22,2
  • The firmware of #2: Firmware Version: 26,2

but the order of the displays doesn't matter. If the MacBook Pro went into sleep mode for a longer period, waking up one of the display often didn't work

I connected the two Displays to my new Mac Pro 2013 again daisy chained and had exactly the same issue. I doubt it has anything to do with the Firmware of the computer. I'd rather say it has something to do with the differences in firmware of the displays.

In regards of the power quality: All of my displays are connected to an APC UPS with highest quality power outlets - all grounded. The Mac Pro is connected to the same UPS.

Please check, if you also have discrepances in your firmware (About This Mac > System Report > Thunderbolt)

I'd like to test what happens if I diectly connect the displays, but the Thunderbolt cord is rather short to allow this with my setup.

Thx

I have tried most of the settings - Including:

Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer under BLUETOOTH ADVANCED SETTINGS

AND

Wake for network access under ENERGY SAVER

None of these things work. When I hit a key or click the moust the DELL U2410 that I have comes on but the THUNDERBOLT monitor does not. I am connecting the THUNDERBOLT with the thunderbolt cable and the dell with an HDMI cable.

I sold my display after owning it two months. It never worked reliably. I think Apple released an unfinished product in this case. Various problems with Sound in and out, iSight cam worked sometimes and sometimes not. Network sometimes never was available. Sometimes it didn't wake up properly.

I now have the older 24" display and it works perfect, every time. Just as it should.

I have similar problems. If I plug in an already booted MBP (late 2011) it does not see the USB ports on the display. If I sleep the computer sometimes it will not wake at all and has to be hard rebooted. This has been going oin since I got the display with my MBP in late 2011. Apple has known about these problems for a while with no fix. Sure wish they would fix it. Thought maybe the just released firmaware update would resolve the issue but there is no mention of it and it still seems to be happending.

This just recently started happening to me (like a couple weeks ago).

It's weird, sinve I've been using the same setup since I got my thunderbolt display (macbook air).

I updated to Mountain Lion, but I don't thgink the issue started happening with Mountain Lion (maybe one of the recent Mountain Lion caused it?)

The issue I started experiencing is that the display won't wake up from sleep, and I need to reboot my Air for the display to work again 😟

I tried changing the settings to uncheck the Put hard disks to sleep when possible, but that didn't fix the problem.

Should also be noted that once in a blue moon, the display will wake up from sleep.

Apple, how do we get you to fix this? I don't have time to call support during the day, and it looks like you decided to shut down email support 😟

Same problem for me. My TB is only two month old. Used less than 4 hour total. Connected to MBP OS 10.7.x

when noticed it would not wake after sleep mode. I had long talks with Support. They connected to my MBP and got all the data to check one week ago. So far no news. I then decided to erase the HD and install the very latest OS 10.8.2 Same problem again :-( No way to restart it. Unplugged TB cable. Restarted many times the MBP, reconnected. Tried everything I could think of. Hours later just disconnected/reconnected the magsafe plug and it restarted. Go figure! It is impossible to work with it under these conditions. Too unreliable.

I do hope that AAPL find a solution otherwise I will have to request a replacement.
