Thunderbolt Display will not wake up after sleep!!!!!!

It seems like a lot of us are having an issue with the THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY opening after it goes to sleep. I have the display connected to a new mac mini server and I can not get it to wake up after it goes to sleep unless I unplug the power or the thunderbolt cable and then plug it back in.

Edward, Have you tried this that I posted a while back? I have not had this problem ever since in Mavericks and Yosemite.

I have not had any issues after unchecking the option "Put hard disk to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver control panel. This was brought to my attention in another post, I tried it and it works. Agreed, it should not be like this, but at least it works until another better solution is found.

Macbook Pro Late 2011 I7 w/ 16GB RAM here. I have the same problem. After I wake my laptop from sleep, if the display doesn't wake immediately, I must apply a workaround each time it wakes, until I reset the PRAM/SMC. I have Yosemite with all the latest OS updates and Thunderbolt firmware updates.

Here are the temporary fixes that I've tried:

1. Resetting SMC/PRAM. Fixes the problem for 1-2 days.

2. Unplugging, replugging Thunderbolt display into port. This can take 6+ attempts before it detects properly.

3. Open lid on laptop, then laptop display becomes primary, and Thunderbolt Display an extended desktop. Then close the lid. I just did this for the first time yesterday, so I'm not sure about the repeatability for a workaround.

4. Reboot.

Given the length of time this problem has gone unfixed, I'm wondering whether or not Apple has long-term plans to support Thunderbolt. Cheaper, mainstream, non-Apple DVI displays aren't plagued with this problem. For the $1k premium I paid for this display, I expect more from this product. Where's the heck is the firmware fix?

Do not buy. As you can see from this discussion, in this case, Apple's technology is seriously flawed. Therefore it should be rejected.

The display is beautiful, and a real work of art, with beautiful resolution - it just does not work correctly. Unless you want to waste endless hours trying to fix a problem that can not be clearly identified, do not purchase the monitor, because it has inferior engineeiing.

I have not had any issues ever since I turned off the option to "put hard disk to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver control panel. Using Macbook Pro Reina.

Besides being a beautiful display, the main advantage is using the displays as a dock for a laptop computer. One cable and everything external is connected. Other wise you can get much less expensive HDMI displays. The main disadvantage for me is that Bootcamp does not support dual thunderbolt displays. Also there is a noticeable refresh delay with animation, such as Prezi presentations.

Thank you, everyone for such quick responses!

I have started looking at Samsung displays and will check out Sony today.

So far I like this one http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/office/monitors/led/LS27B970DS/ZC

I'm just looking for a new monitor that I can trust the color. I had a Dell 24" a few years ago. Great monitor but I just didn't trust the color, even after calibration. I replaced it with the 23" Apple Cinema Display. Also beautiful but it is also quirky, after a power outage you have to play tic tac toe with power plugs to get it to come to life again, and it doesn't support HDCP. The Apple monitors are just so reliable with color reproduction!

If I could be sure that simply buying a new cable or adjusting the sleep settings would be enough, then I would order the TBD instantly, but even those fixes don't seem to work for everyone. Argh!!

Thank you all for your comments!

I Have two of the monitors and have found that leaving the machine on twenty four hours per day will keep the monitors lit up, and the computer will black them out without going to sleep. However, if I restart the machine, the monitors will not come back on until they are unplugged and allowed to sit in the corner a few days,. Nevertheless, when the monitors are working, still they will not pass the thunderbolt linkages further along to a hard drive which now is useless.

SO I would look for alternative displays and possibly a different technology from thunderbolt if possible.

I Was planning on upgrading to the new retina display, but do not trust the technology enough to risk the expenditures.

IT is not the cables. People think it is, but what really is happening is that the monitors are resetting themselves while they are sitting on the shelf at the repair shop, at least that is my guess.

SONY might have the accurate color you need but I do not have adequate knowledge to suggest an alternative to the Apple mess.

I love reading these forums. I really just like reading and waiting for the inevitable "why would you want to do what you asked about in the first place/ You can't/Apple is so wonderful you are crazy for not using the ect."

I have never wanted to punch anyone so badly in my life. Every Single Time I read these boards I'm just waiting for some smarmy little sht to chime in with a totally obnoxious reply that answers nothing or just has to opine their total obsequious loyalty to the corporate iCock.

Money dude. 18 Billion with a capital "B" in one quarter. Made off phones. If they sell a monitor you can bet your *** it'll be a 1000.00 frickin MONITOR. Just a monitor. You did as I did and bought it figuring "Sheet, it's all Apple it'll just work!"

Nope. Where are Apple's priorities? Your Wallet. That's where.

You can keep your fucing "points" What am I ten? Level your mom.

More or less same profile, though the Apple Store solution was to finally concede the original TBD just could not be figured out and they gave me a new monitor. It has been a few weeks since the switch and all is working as it should. Then added bonus is the monitor is covered for a year, though having the more than mild suggest to get Applecare on it does fill me with a fair amount of trepidation.

Despite the positive resolution, no one should have to deal with all the back and forth with the Applecare rep. ( I can't imagine what it would have been like without that coverage) and then the numerous trips to the not so local Apple store. As noted by many this has been an ongoing problem for years and a recall notice and replacement program should be in the offing for all.

I have a MBP and this display and have been having the same issue as many in this post. After about 6 months, the display started flickering and I had the cable replaced at my local Apple store. While this fixed the flickering issue, the display would still not wake up after sleep on a consistent basis.

I do think I finally solved this by using a thunderbolt cable from the MBP to the port on the back of the display. In over two weeks now it has worked every time. For $40 a great workaround. Not optimal, because something is still broken, but at least I can wake up the display now. My guess is there is a design flaw in the logic board for the built-in cable.

Hope this helps

I subsequently also found it necessary to change pmset settings to disable standby and hibernatemode. With these changes and the bypass cable the MBP now wakes properly after a full night's sleep. pmset settings (which may not all be necessary but do work for me as a package) are:

Active Profiles:

Battery Power -1*

AC Power -1

Currently in use:

standbydelay 8640000

standby 0

halfdim 1

hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

darkwakes 0

gpuswitch 2

disksleep 10

sleep 10

autopoweroffdelay 720000

hibernatemode 0

autopoweroff 0
