Hi, I switched to Verizon iPhone 4, so my old AT&T iPhone 3gs is no longer in use.
I travel internationally and would like to unlock my old iPhone 3gs so I can use it with sim cards when I travel.
I understand there is now an "official" unlocking that can happen through iTunes. Is that true? How can I do it?
Or is there another way to unlock my old phone that is legal?

Normally I would say contact the carrier, but a quick scan of these boards will tell you that AT&T will not unlock an iphone under any circumstances for anybody. You can't get it done.
An official unlock is done by itunes, but the carrier has to authorise it and AT&T wont.

Yes, it's still true. AT&T will not unlock an iPhone under any circumstances. I don't expect it to change unless they are forced to by law. If you want the policy changed, either obtain a majority shareholder position in AT&T or lobby congress to change the law. They are currently not required to unlock phones and since there is no financial incentive for them to do so, they will not do it.
Yes, it is, however, verizon will unlock your SIM card slot for free. The requirements:
* Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
* The iPhone 4S being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
* The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
* The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
* Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.

I can confirm this as I did it last November for my sister before she traveled to London.
That will be of very little use to someone with a 3Gs locked to AT&T...

Maybe Verizon sold 2 models of iphones because mine doesn't even have a SIM slot. So this is not possible for the simple reason that there is no SIM slot in the phone. I got one of the first Verizon phones and it is CDMA only.
The Verizon iPhone 4 does not contain a SIM slot. It is CDMA only. The 4S is a "world phone". It has a SIM slot. On Verizon and Sprint, it can only be used for International roaming, eithe with a Verizon or Sprint SIM on their international partners, or, if you're good, unlocked for use with International SIMs.
