Siri on iPad 2

If they have voice recognition on almost every device now, now they're probably gonna make a device that uses a camera that monitors your hands so you wouldn't actually need a touch screen. Maybe just a smell receptor so you can send smells over the air. I also just got news that Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, has died.

I really am not trying to be outrageous or anything. I am not a Mac user. I just bought an iPad 2 because it suited my needs. Right now, Apple is on top. However, there are other major players who want in on the mobile action.

If one of them does manage to put out devices that can serve the consumer better, Apple might lose customers to that company.

In my opinion, it's not a good strategy to take away something that the customer has had simply to put it on a new product. Improve the new product. Put new stuff on it. But don't take away the stuff I have been using -- merely to get us to buy a new product.

And get serious. Why would Apple be pitting two current products against one another? I have no intention of getting a iPhone. I don't like the small screen. That's why I bought a iPad.

See. I behaved myself. I didn't name Apple competitors. :-)

Did everyone miss Apple pulling a Google move?

It's BETA software.

They said this during the keynote.

It's not done cooking yet.

Give it time, wait for it to move out of beta before getting your undies in a wad.

i think that's a good sign, but in germany it's not allowed to open this link so i can't check it in iTunes...

The link in the screenshot is about the Siri app that was on the App Store, not the Siri that runs natively on the iPhone4S. All that Siri will no longer work as of October 14 or 15 I believe.

O.K. I'd like to share a few things I've heard that may help clarify some of the posts above.

1. Siri Assistant has been available for free for some time. I've used it, and it works well. After Apple purchased the company they went to work expanding it's capabilities. The Siri that Apple will release is a HUGE upgrade.

2. Even though the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S have essentially the same A5 processor, they do NOT have the same amount of RAM. The new iPhone 4S has 1gb of ram. This is essential for Siri to work. So because of that I think we won't see the new Siri on the iPad 2. Of course, when Apple announces the iPad 3 with more RAM, it will work on that.

3. When I boot up Siri assistant on my iPhone 4, it now says "I've been replaced! The new Siri is even smarther and better looking than me, and waiting for you on the iPhone 4S. I'll be leaving for home Oct. 15th."

I thing that having a little patience here will take care of this feeling of injustice. Apple will not leave iPad users out there flapping in the breeze. We know that Siri will most probably be on all the iOS devices in the near future. they did make a point at the Keynote of mentioning that Siri is being released in Beta Form. i don't know of anything else that Apple has ever released to the broader public in Beta form. Perhaps this is partly why it's only on the iPhone 4S at this point and not simply because Apple is trying to hold out on all their other customers? Maybe it's a little about money, but maybe it's mostly about getting all the kinks out...'Betas' usually, most always have kinks. When I think about that aspect of the specialized release, it makes sense. Why would they want to roll out a system wide Siri in all the iOS devices out there when it's not perfected yet? Imagine the bug reports and the calls about a system-wide full on public Beta Rollout? That, in itself, is very un-Apple like.

I have a feeling it will end up coming to the iPad 3 but not iPad2, so they can use it as a selling point there as well.

As far as the Beta goes, I really don't think Apple would release something in beta, I think they simply said that during the keynote meaning "we still haven't launched the software fully yet, not until the 15th, so excuse any problems we might experience" They have to put in the little disclaimer since they're doing a Voice Recognition demo in a room full of people where it might not be the quietest. Luckily it went very well and there were no mistakes, but they'd have to say that so that if it misunderstood something they can just say "well it's beta".

Guess again. It is clearly Beta software and shall be for some time.

First of all it is not confirmed that the 4S has 1GB of RAM also the Infinity Blade developer let it slip in an interview that the 4S actually had 512MB of RAM

We will need to wait until the 4S is released and iFixIt does a teardown to confirm this.

Second most of Siri's processing is done in the cloud and then sent back to the device note Apple's website.

Really? I didn't get that impression from the Keynote when they mentioned that Siri would be in Beta. I think Siri will, like some others have said, "be in Beta for some time". I can't imagine how it wouldn't be. While the tech is not exactly all that new--voice recognition--GOOD, POLISHED Voice Recognition software that is tied in with a program that actually 'learns', would be for the mainstream consumer electronics market.
