What is Stuffit SITx?

I downloaded an HQX file from the Tascam website. It is supposed to contain the drivers for one of their products. When I expanded the file it turned into a Stuffit archive of type SITx TEXT format.

When I double-clicked the file, Stuffit Expander fired up, thought for a couple of seconds and quit. There were no messages and no expanded collection of files. According to the Stuffit website, I have the correct version to expand these files.

Why didn't the archive expand properly? The archive is 1.1 MB in size.

The link provided earlier indicates that StuffitX files need to have a "backward compatibility" option checked in order to work with earlier Stuffit versions. Perhaps that wasn't checked when the file was made?

I'm running Tiger at the moment and don't even have Stuffit (I use The Unarchiver) but it downloads that archive and produces various files fine.

Compatibility.
The StuffIt X format was introduced with StuffIt 7 for Mac OS X and for Classic Mac OS. It was introduced on Windows with StuffIt 8.

Newer features of the StuffIt X format such as JPEG compression and MP3, PDF, Zip and image recompression may not be compatible with earlier versions of StuffIt Expander, but it's easy to create StuffIt X archives that are by checking StuffIt 12's "Backwards Compatible" option when creating your StuffIt X archives.

You can use StuffIt X archives made with the "Backwards Compatible" option on any version of Classic Mac OS from 8.6 to 9.x, and any version of Mac OS X. You can also use StuffIt X archives on Windows.

In order to expand a StuffIt X archive, your recipient must have a copy of at least StuffIt Expander 7.0 Mac, or or StuffIt 8 for Windows installed. StuffIt Expander is always free! Send your friends and associates here to download their own copy...

Well I don't have any version of X runnng. Do the files you unarchived look like viable OS 9 files? Setting up an X sytem will be a royal pain for me particularly if I can't use the unarchived files on my native OS 9 system.

Yes they do. I just did it using Tiger because that is what I run without having to close multiple applications and reboot my computer to OS9. I didn't expect you to do it, but part of the issue seemed to be does the archive posted even contain viable files, which it does indeed appear to contain.. It does not look corrupted to me although I didn't actually test any of the files (since I don't have your device). Now whether or not Stuffit itself can open it is anothe matter, but you'd think Stuffit's own software should be able to expand their own format file if some third party utility can.

Re: What is Stuffit SITx?

I contacted The Stuffit people (Smith Micro) and Jay Robinson kindly responded - even though the Mac OS 9 product is long since discontinued. Below is his responxe:

Gary,

This is not a .sitx file and I cannot help you with it. You may want to go back to the person tha sent you this file and see if they can change it for you. As it is a old BinHex file the current StuffIt does not know what it is and could not open it. Sorry.

Well, Jay Robinson, even though it is a Binhex file right now, it goes through the first stage of processing to produce a Sitx file, doesn't it? The Unarchiver takes it seamlessly through all the steps for me so I didn't see the intermediate files such as the Sitx one.

I'm inclined to say that engrossing as this topic may be, the underlying task seems to be getting uncompressed files onto your computer. To that end it might be easiest for one of us simply decompress the file, recompress the files into a simpler format, and e-mail you the result (add e-mail temporarily to your profile - I have a low-priority junker account for just such things).

That is most CERTAINLY my goal. The people at Tascam (where the file originated) have been profoundly silent regarding my request for a proper archive file.

Limnos per your request, I've changed the privacy setting of my email address from "Me" to "Registered Users". I would be REALLY pleased if you (or someone else) would convert the file into something I can actually use. The equipment (VERY expensive) is sitting idle while I am sorting this problem out.
