Complete Siri handsfree interaction?

Ok want to pick on the smart brains in a jar here..

There should be a better way for complete handsfree Siri requests. Pressing a button to talk, to me is "not there yet". I hope that for a not so distant future upgrade the iPhone be programmed so that the mic is active when the iPhone is not being used and a small background app scan or listens for a specific keyword or phrase to activate Siri.

A handsfree interactive session would be something like:

Human: - talking to other humans then suddenly says "Siri, can you help?"

The small program picks up the phrase and activates Siri (a much larger battery eating application).

Siri: "How can I assist?" (or anything else not corny)

Human: -whatever his normal request is...

See, no pressing a button and waiting several seconds for a response. If that happends, I hope Apple allows the customer have the liberty to program/customize any phrase or keyword he desires. Therefore the app can be of smaller footprint and easier to listen regardless of language, accent and so on. I imagine some of us will have something like "Computer" in a Star Trek kind of way or "Mother" like in Aliens or "HAL 9000"... You guys get the point.

Sadly, many customers will not use Siri much because of the pressing the button and waiting for Siri to come up thing. - Lazyiness? well yes! That is what technology is all about, making us lazy... Wall-e anyone? Remember the humans in the Axiom Starliner?

The iPhone is the future... Actually, I don't think the name iPhone pays tribute to what it really is.

What are your thoughts on all this?

What would prevent a mic from being active all the time?

Would you prefer to use the button instead?

"There is a problem with Siri always listening for a cue. I can walk into the apple store and say "Siri I need help" and all the iPhones will try to answer at the exact same time annoying the **** out of everyone."

First of all, not that many people have the iphone 4s, and FAR fewer have it jailbroken, and even fewer have it jailbroken WITH handsfree installed.

Secondly, you can set the key word to pretty much any dictionary word. So if you really think that that will be a problem, just make your word like "platapus".

Unless you're a zoo keeper, I don't think many people will be activating your phone.

I want the same hands-free capability for Siri. I don't want to jailbreak my iPhone to get it. Has anyone on this thread went to the iPhone feedback page and requested this feature? I use Mac OS X Speech (not dictation the command-and-control feature that's been with Mac OS X for many years) with a keyword and it works very well. I'm probably unique to this thread because I'm physically disabled. I'm a high level quadriplegia and I can't push the button. Having this hands-free feature would make iPhone even more enabling. So I'm going over and request this feature on the iPhone feedback page. Anybody else with me?

I too am looking for a Apple endorsed solution for hands free Siri activation. I am disabled and have had my 4s running with the above mentioned handsfree app installed with great success and have not experienced a battery drain problem with the typical overnight charge in its dock . . . no different than anyone else in that ritual. I live with the constant fear that an update or loss of my phone with the older version of iOS will disable my JB and prevent me from a voice activated keyword for Siri. I am currently evaluating the Moto X with built-in activation by saying "OK Google now".

I wish Apple would allow this app in their Apple Store so I can rest easy with my iPhone in its charging dock bedside . . . not its Moto X competitor. So yes I'm with you. If Apple wishes to contact me on my hardware experience using this software I welcome them to contact me and my claims made above.

nkottman,

That's funny. I've been considering getting a Moto X just for the "Okay Google Now" feature. It's pretty sad that we have to consider this because it's not available on iPhone. Have you gone and filled out a feature request for iPhone? Have you gone to the Apple accessibility site and requested this feature? If not, please do. Please tell everyone you know to go request this feature. There is power in numbers.

Thanks...

I'm glad you people are interested in using Siri without physical interaction. I support people who are using iPads and need to control the device by voice alone. This is because they find it difficult to press the button and need hands-free because they have Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis etc - conditions which will make touching an swiping progressively difficult.

The devices my clients are trying to use are iPads, so raising the device (as iPhone) is not an option even if they all could do it.

Please can someone provide a link to the web page where I can put in a request to Apple to make the update? I want to stress the need being for accessibility and equality.
