IOS 5 make ipad1 unusable

I was burnt by the ios update on my iphone 3G a year ago, it made it slow and unusable for a very long time, eventualy I gave up on it. Is this going to happen to Ipad1 when we install IOS5? Will Apple make Ipad 1 redundant on purpose and push us all into buying Ipad2 or Ipad3?

I have a bad feeling about this and its not as if we have much choice.

It may have been hyperbolic, I broke the do not reply while angry rule. I regret this. I am now merely frustrated. However, I submit that your being an iPad2 user is rather precisely the point. The iOS5 update is intended to operate normally with your devise, thus you are not a lucky but rather a normal iPad2 user. The iOS5 update, however, is designed to reduce the functionality of the iPad1, thus I am not unlikely, but, rather, also a typical user, albeit one using the first generation device. I feel punished for buying the first generation iPad, which I got in December of 2010, and pressured into buying the nect generation. It isn't merely a matter of never updating my iPad, it is also deciding whether to never update my iTunes, or never backing-up my iPad again for fear of accidentally downloading the update.

I am an iPad original version user myself. Purchased it in October and it will be one year old in 10 days. I updated the software and while I certainly don't have all of the features at my disposal in the new software (no camera for instance) I have suffered no ill effects either as a result of the upgrade.

All apps work as expected (Contacts app has one very small issue but does work), I lost no data whatsoever and everything seems to be going fine for me.

Certainly I wish that multi-touch gestures were available to me and I was hoping for photo editing in the photos app (again - no camera on the original model) which are not available - but I cannot agree with your statement ...

...because my iPad DOES have more functionality since the upgrade - not all of the features that I wanted - but more functionality nonetheless.

How is your safari working? What is your experience with the crashes? I ask in curiosity, not in challenge, I confess, I would like nothing better than to be proven wrong. But the benchmark tests: http://www.yourdailymac.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ipad1.png and http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=17340 "In fact, with the exception of the original iPad (the older device that was tested), all (other) devices actually gained in performance in most areas." As well as numerous reports of instability, particularly in Safari makes me suspicious. Especially in light of the "with the exception of the original iPad" bit; couple that with the retraction of gesture commands, and I still feel like I have lost what I used, and gained little in return, a net loss. Still, I am not a computer expert, nor would I rank these pages as the most authorative. I will acquies to a more informed voice, but I am thus far not swayed.

I have no idea whether it is slow or not (others have said it is actually OK). But for those saying "you have a choice" I would argue that unless OS 4 continues to recieve security updates, users will have to upgrade or face browsing the web with security flaws (lets face it, there are bound to be some over the next few months)

Does anyone know if OS4 will be updated with security patches (and whether iTunes will let you download it, when it is advertising OS5 as the next update).

Thanks,

It should be known that older hardware will not keep up with newer software and maintain it's "zippyness." We will merely need to be a little more patient. Everything works for me after a week of use. It's just not as responsive. I'm in the camp of 'the new features overshadow the losses.' Think of it like this: when you upgrade hardware the experience will be that much more exciting. BTW, I love the new notifications!

Safari has crashed on me twice - on the iPad and the iPod Touch. Safari worked well for me for the first few months that I had my iPad, but I have had crashes with Safari and every other browser that I ever used - no matter which iOS version I was running at the time. It was suggested to me that I should restore the iPad and I did - just several weeks ago in fact - but the problem continued until I removed some seldom used game apps - Internet reliant games - and I had great success again. But now the crashes have started again. So now I do have that little issue going on again - quite annoying actually. On the other hand - I really like the tabbed browsing and the reader list feature that have been added to Safari.

Other than that, all of my apps and app data transferred flawlessly. The entire update process, restoring and opening an iCloud account took about 90 minutes to complete on my iPad and took about half of that amount of time on the Touch. I updated the iPad on Wedneday evening and the Touch yesterday afternoon.

I am having one monir issue with the Contacts app in that I can no longer "title" additional email addresses for new contacts entered right on the devices - there are a few others that I have seen with this issue - both versions of iPads as well - but all in all everything else seems to be going fine.

I was too busy to upgrade to Lion immediately and I usually wait because the servers get overwhelmed.

Once I had sorted out how to move from Entourage to Mail I downloaded Lion and iOS5 on the same day. Overall about 3 hour, including a full backup first and no problems, messages or hitches. No disaster, death or discomfort.

What's to fix?

Some people get these in changing some setups, the vast majority don't and they are the ones who haven't posted. Try the

Full resets, and I hope it sorts itself out for you soon.

Have to agree with the most recent posts. My iPad1 crashes constantly! Apps that used to work with ios4 don't now. Safari crashes all the time. I don't see any improvements with the new ios5. Wish Apple would address this. I keep looking for any os updates - but nothing. Getting VERY frustrated with Apple and how useless my iPad has become! Actually started using my desktop more. (dont get me started on Newsstand and how my single magazine subscription is now trapped in there)
