MacBook keyboard stopped working

I need to start off by saying that I'm not a Mac person, so forgive me for not knowing some of the basic terminology. Also, please refrain from responding with the "Duuuuhhh.... WHY DIDN'T YOU TRY __________ " comments.

I'm looking at a friend's Macbook. It's a white 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo running 10.5.8 and its Model Identifier is MacBook4,1.

Her internal keyboard has stopped working, but a USB keyboard works fine. The integrated touchpad works just fine, too. She swears up and down that she didnt drop it and didnt spill anything on it, which looks to be true.

I've booted to an OSX install disc (attempting to bypass the OS and see if it was a software issue) and it doesn't work there, either. I didn't go through with the reinstall, because it didn't seem necessary. Being a PC guy, at this point I'd normally say definitively that the keyboard needs to be replaced.

After some googling, I was shocked to find out that I was able to reset its PRAM using the Command-Option-P-R keys. While that process seems to actually work, it doesn't fix the problem. ***!? Why would the KB work there, but not in OSX or the install disc?

Try to start up in Safe Mode and test the keyboard again.

To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:

1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.

2. Press the power button.

3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.

4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

During startup you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. To leave Safe Mode, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

I know this may seem like a dumb question but when I ran the script in terminal it produced the following:

Last login: Sat Aug 4 08:14:08 on console

unknown0021e9e32258:~ kevin$ kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 } '

com.vmware.kext.vmx86

com.vmware.kext.vmci

com.vmware.kext.vmioplug

com.vmware.kext.vmnet

com.sophos.kext.sav

unknown0021e9e32258:~ kevin$

Now that I have this information, how do I go about deleting these files to hopefully solve my issue.

My issue is very similar to everyone elses here, after leaving my keyboard and trackpad stationary for a minute of two, it becomes nonresponsive. If I then close the lid and let the mac go into sleep mode for just a second and reopen the lid it begins to work again. This has been a very consistent fix the an annoying problem. The apple ppl say that its a harddrive issue but I beg to differ. Please let me know how I can go about deleting these files.

Thanks in advance.

If it's a white macbook it probably is not a software problem. The battery is probably swollen (which is a common problem with these models apparently) and putting pressure on the keyboard and trackpad causing them not to work. I had this same problem on my 2008 white macbook. For me it started where the mouse cursor would go haywire and I could click by gently touching anywhere on the bottom part of the laptop.

I would highly recomend getting a new battery, which is what I will be doing when I get enough dough. I am currently using a usb keyboard and mouse.

Hi, The keyboard for my imac suddenly not working for four keys - 7, J, U, M. I unplugged the UBS and plugged into another UBS connector, it worked. But it didn't take too long before the same problem happened again. Now I plugged the keyboard to a macbook. It has the same problem. Does it mean the keyboard has to be replaced? It used only one year. Is there anyway to fix it?

Thank you.

This solved my problem. Thanks!

Had accidentally pressed the option key too many times. If this happens to you, also make sure to turn off the keyboard shortcut (5 times option key).

This can be done in Preferences under Accessibility > Options . Here turn off the 'press the option key five times to toggle Mouse Keys' setting.

It's looking like my MBP Retina is going to get a visit to the apple monkeys at the store, because even after reinstalling the OS I'm still having this problem. It's a major productivity limiter, since I can't use the machine without its keyboard working, and constantly rebooting the machine isn't acceptable, particularly when it might work again for 3 days or for 10 minutes before the keyboard stops working (again).

So much for "it just works" I suppose.

This is the worst experience I have ever had with a computer in over 20 years, so I think this piece of junk is going to be my last mac ever. The machines are just not reliable, and apple's customer service is crap.

YOU WIN THE INTERWEBS!

I have been a Mac user since 1989, have even showed people in the past how to use Mouse Keys.

But I COMPLETELY forgot that sys pref was there, and have been somehow inadvertently hitting the option key 5x and turning the regular keyboard off, and driving myself crazy having to to restart to get my keyboard back!

/Bows 5x in your direction!

Thanks, Governa, for all your kind attempts to help!

The second link of the three cnet links worked.... I unchecked every keyboard shortcut and !voila! problem fixed.

As someone else said, unfortunately I cannot use my keyboard shortcuts. . .. but yeah!

This is a start. I will keep exploring the original cause. I am pretty certain, I am at fault by pressing the keyboard against my arm or some such and unsuspectingly pressing a combo that turned things off. I knew the keyboard was not a total loss because, oddly enough, I could type my password in to open the computer. But after that, the keyboard did not type anything whatsoever.

Again, all the articles were rather informative.
