can i record streaming audio with garage band?

I just switched to a Mac. On my PC I had software that allowed me to record streaming audio (I'm a music teacher - I frequently need audio examples of songs and performances that are not sold). Can Garage Band do this? I know it can record whatever is coming out of the speakers, but I would prefer a higher quality audio example - something that can record from within.
