I have the Belkin USB 2.0 PCMCIA cardbus card model F5U222, which I ordered directly from Belkin, since my local CompUSA was sold out of them.

This model does charge and sync my 30 GB 5th generation iPod with video quickly and efficiently on my USB 1.1 Ti G4 PowerBook. I did not need to plug the card's included adapter cable in, nor download any "third party USB 2.0 drivers," for this process to work, despite what the Belkin documentation said. I am using OS 10.4.4.

I should also note that the PCMCIA card was not recognized by my PowerBook, nor did it work with any USB 1.1 peripherals, until AFTER I restarted the laptop the first time it was installed in the side PC slot. I dunno what that was about, because it hasn't had that problem since.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Yes, that's all it took for it to work for me! After that first restart, I haven't had any further issues with the card going unrecognized, and it shows up both in the System Profiler after choosing "About This Mac" in the Apple Menu, and as a card icon in the menubar.

The process is pretty intuitive, and the music and video files transfer pretty fast. I haven't attempted to fill up the whole iPod, though, so I can't comment on how long it would take to do that in a single session.

You can click here for a link to the PCMCIA card in question.

Thanks.

Let me re-state to be sure I understand:

Plug it in, restart the PowerBook, then plug in the
5G iPod and rock.

I had the same problem and can verify that the Adaptec USB2connect PCMCIA card (AUA-142OA) works like a charm. It provides two USB 2.0 outlets, which allows for both the 5G iPod and also new EyeTV hardware to work. This allows me to put TiVo'd shows on my iPod with relative ease.

DO NOT USE the Adaptec card with the two USB ports, the firewire port and the other tiny Sony firewire port. Even sticking it in your PCMCIA slot will cause the computer to COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. In other words, DON'T use this one:

DO use this one:

I have an older version of the Adaptec USB 2.0 card that I used with a graphics tablet, and it worked great too. Frankly, I was stunned that my Powerbook had only USB 1.1 slots, but whatchya gonna do.

I was tempted to try the COMPUSA brand USB 2.0 card reader, as I think it was only $19.95. Perhaps someone out there might like to experiment - if it works, that's insanely much cheaper.
