Several times per day my right speaker will cut out almost completely, and the left speaker will lose all bass and sound extremely tinny. This lasts for a random amount of time and will fix itself without needing a reboot. It is OS wide and it does not matter what applications i'm using.
Any ideas? Time to send it to Apple?

This happened to me a long time ago and a restart fixed it, but if you said that the reboot didn't work well, you might wanna go to the Apple Store so they can check you Mac... I would suggest you to run a hardware test on you Mac by pressing the "D" key on the start up...
Thanks for the info. A reboot solves it for a while but it always comes back.. And the hardware test didn't show any errors.
well, as soon as you can reboot your computer and press and hold Command-Option-P-R keys until you hear the 3rd start up sound.

This is the EXACT same problem I'm having with my MacBook Pro 13". It's a new 2011 model and actually within 45 minutes of having it open for the first time, I noticed all of a sudden my speakers went extremely tinny and the sound was almost non-existent. This happens to me now all the time. I've taken it back to Apple twice but both times the speakers have been working. I've just booked in again, and I am going to leave it with them until they hear it! It happens with whatever I'm listening to at the time, whether it be iTunes, YouTube or VLC. And like you said, the right side will almost completely cut out and only the left will be barely audible. And then after a period of time it'll come back to normal. Sometimes if I lift the MacBook up and move it around in the air it will come back as well. Did you end up getting it fixed????
This is happening to me as I type this. Started happening about a month ago, figured it was just interference and would go away. The problem is still there, although it isn't getting worse. But when I listen to certain music, the sound is incredibly wavy. The audio moves from left to right, and back again, and sometimes the lyrics cut out; other times the bass disappears. I have a 2011 MBP 13". I watch a lot of F1 racing and listen to different types of music. Perhaps I've just blown out my speakers a bit early? I will bring it in to Apple this week and update.
I just noticed this happening with my 2009 MBP 15". I haven't used my laptop for a few days, but when I played a song on it, it sounded horribly flat, almost no bass. Everyone thinks i'm crazy 😟 but I swear the sound is drastically different.
Same problem here with 2011 15" Macbook Pro. Right speaker cuts out, sounds is very tinny and thin.
I've found I can get the speaker to cut in and out by putting pressure on the bottom of the laptop on the right hand side.
I know this is an old thread, but anyone get theirs resolved?
Opened mine up and found there's a speaker connector near the middle that leads off to the right hand speaker. It's a really ****** design. Removed it, retensioned the pins on the board, and put the the connector back, and it's fixed. Looks like it was never assembled correctly.
