Possible virus on iPhone Yahoo account

In order to enable iCloud, I had to use my yahoo account given my regular gmail one is not accepted. Consequenty I configured it on my iPhone and soon found appearing in my contacts a huge list of entries that I did not see in my web yahoo account.

What is worse is that "something" started to spam all those addresses with assorted messages like the following one:

"Hello
I had finally hit rock bottom this helped me back to my feet now there is no turning back no pressure just check it out
http://sextacasa.com.ar/AdrianPatterson10.html
see you later"

or

Hey Friend...

i can't imagine doing anything else ever again

c ya.

Both my pc at work and my personal mac were off at that time and so they could not be the culprits: moreover neither of them have a configured yahoo address neither in Apple Mail nor Thunderbird.

I contacted yahoo that answered me as follows:

But, nothwithstanding their reply, the messages kept on being sent.

As a preacutionary measure I removed all those mysteriously appeared yahoo contacts from my iPhone, just leaving myself to check what happens. Still I am very worried at a number of different levels: both for me, my phone and for Apple in general.

Thanks for your answer,

Fabrizio

I confirm my iPhone is not jailbroken, still your answer is puzzling: is not my yahoo account installed on the iPhone on the official Mail app?!

Even windows does not produce viruses by itself, but rather is sometimes not keen enough to stop intruder programs to do so; that is what I always heard Apple products did not allow.

The other option is that the Yahoo server in California is compromised, but that would have made already a bigger bang than the one my message could ever make.

Your e-mail account has been compromised. Someone has managed to guess or otherwise crack your password and is now using your account to send spam.

Change your password. Now.

The offender may continue to impersonate you by forging your e-mail address and sending through other servers. There is nothing you can do to stop that if that's the case.

The Yahoo servers aren't compromised as a whole, just your account.
