TOSHIBA & IPOD = NOT GOOD!! ... but there's HOPE

Okay peeps ... I posted for help the other day and I got NO response. But I was able to conquer my dilemna on my OWN! The problem I had (see that, I wrote HAD) was my Toshiba laptop was not recognizing my ipod. I got to the point of trying to restore my ipod and I got FIRMWARE UPDATE FAILURE, DISK WRITE ERROR.
So, I searched on this site frimware update .. I got jibberish about Mac firmware updates .. hello, I have a WINDOWS OS! Stayed up till midnite trying to find answers.
So, tonite I searched on this site diskwrite error. LO & BEHOLD .. I got an answer!! Theres a document that read "Ipod not recognized correctly on Toshiba laptop". I SCREAMED!! My problems were stated ...
1) Itunes for Windows doesn't recognize your ipod
2) Windows & Ipod updater recognize your Ipod BUT you get a DISK WRITE ERROR when you try to restore Ipod using Ipod Updater. BINGO!!
I printed up the instructions and guess what ... MY $400+ 60GB black shiny toy that I've had since the beginning of December FINALLY WORKS!!
I called all my friends to tell them cause this process has been eating at me and NO ONE was able or even tried to help me.
So, for all you Toshiba peeps .... this WILL save your life! Trust me ... let's just cross our fingers that nothing else happens .. laughs! 🙂

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I was just about to give up hope and sell it. But, I went and got my 3rd replacement ipod in 2 months, I followed what it said on the doc and it FINALLY WORKS! Although, it is still downloading 10,000 songs since last night. But, it hasn't froze and seems to be working.

?? Did you turn your "Enchanced USP" ports back on? Or leave them off? Thanks again!

sorry, haven't checked back on this for a few days, been busy with the ipod since it FINALLY works.

don't mention it about the help. i'm glad i could help someone cause no one seemed to wanna help me ... so spread the word.

i enabled my usb port cause it would prove beneficial when transferring stuff from pc to ipod, go a little faster ... somewhat.

so, if all else fails just disable and enable ... if that don't work ... then we're SCREWED!! telling you, it's one giant conspiracy by apple to get windows consumers to buy a mac. i know, i'm crazy but that's what a non functioning apple product will do to you ... laughs!

take care & aloha!

Thanks again! I uploaded 10,000 songs in 24 hours with the USB port "Enchanched" disabled. It probley would have gone faster if I changed it back, but I was too afraid it might act up again and freeze up.

One last question. Did you update your iPod with the latest (1.1) updater? Because I never did, with all the horor stories I've read on these forums about the latest updater I didn't want to press my luck. But if it helps the iPod in the long run, maybe I should...

THANKS!!

TO GUYPOD ...

type this into the search field (apple.com)
DISK WRITE ERROR

should be the first document listed but look for document that reads "IPOD NOT RECONGIZED CORRECTLY ON TOSHIBA LAPTOP".

print it, even if you don't have a Toshiba but can't seem to get your updater work. Trust me, I've done the 5R's a bunch of times .. so, at least give this method a try.

if you follow the directions to the tee, which is EZ to follow hopefully it'll solve your problem. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!! 🙂

TO RAS GONZO ..

WOO HOO!! Glad I was able to help someone out!! 🙂

I struggle for a looooonnnnnggggg time until I stumbled across this solution. I was pretty bummed cause quite a few peeps on here and other sites were very anti-assitance, they only had wise *** remarks about my inabilities. BUTTHEADS!

Wow .. I'm stoked I helped you out! 🙂 So, to answer your question, yes I did update to the new one. No problem-os.
The only thing I have happen is when I update my ipod with new music, I get a message about not being able to update. I don't remember quite what it said. All I did was click okay and update my ipod (right click on ipod icon in itunes source, click on update). Starts right where it left off. That message pops up often so it's not like you can walk off and not keep an eye on it. It's not that big of a deal to me. Remember, I just got it to work (had ipod since the beginning of Dec.), so I'm just happy that it's working and I've got stuff on there.

My next attempt is to get movies on it. Any advice?? Or are you just as clueless as me? If you have some insight, please share. If not, I'll update you as I go, that's if you wanna know.

Hope all is well and update me on your progress.

ALOHA

Hey Momi808,

Yeah, I've had mine since the middle of November and have gone through 2 other units before finally my 3rd one works, thanks to your help! I knew it had to be a compatability issue with my laptop, but I didn't think it was a USB issue. I am going to get a new USB2 port in my spare PCI card port, cause everytime I change my port back to "Enchanched" it messes up my iPod, but all my other USB enabled devices work fine?

To answer your question about videos. I haven't tried to add any yet. My iPod is pretty much full of music, with only a 1/2 gig left, so I have no room for videos... I hope everything continues to work good for you.

I have had similar issues with my iPod Video 30GB, and disabling the USB 2.0 definitely helps when reformatting or updating the firmware when my iPod stops working.

Good news though, I have had relatively good success transferring music to it with USB 2.0 enabled. I believe I may still get a firewire adapter just to make life easier but for the time being things seem to work.

I have found that if I receive a disk write error while updating the iPod in iTunes, simply hitting "Update iPod" again works just fine. Whatever you do don't panic and uplug the iPod!

I wish you all success with your iPods and many hours of listening enjoyment.
