"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

Ran Windows Update, installed all the latest. Running Windows 7 x64 on an Asus N61JV trying to install iTunes 10.5.0.142x64 😕 Just doesn't want to go.................{sigh} Just bought an iPad over the weekend too.

I was having the same issue. Heres what I did:

1. Uninstalled itunes. (dont worry this does not delete your music or media)

2. restart

3. if install doesnt work, go to control panel > Uninstall program > left click on Apple Update Software so that it's highlighted > Click on Repair at the top.

4. Wait until the process is complete and then try reinstalling. Worked for me after that.

The old Apple Update Software must not be communicating very well with the new itunes software.

Good luck!

Deleted all software in an order mentioned in another topic in this forum. Reloaded. Noticed that mobile device support application was not present. Anyway. Can run itunes. Yay. But when I connect the iPad, I get an error message saying that a piece of software was missing. Gave up. Especially since I was fighting the iOS upgrade of iPhone on another machine. All too much.

Thank you very much. I've been searching for a solution for over a day now, and your link worked perfectly.

All I did was download that program and chose to 'Fix' the 'Apple Software Update' program which you cannot see in the Programs under Control Panel. Once I clicked 'Fix', it took maybe 1 or 2 minutes, and I tried re-installing iTunes 10.5, and it worked.

Thanks again. Highly recommended fix for anyone with the same problem.

I was able to successfully uninstall just the Apple Software Updater, but iTunes 10.5 still won't install for me.

I'm toying with uninstalling all of my Apple programs, as suggested, but one thing I'm nervous about is losing all of my playlists, song ratings, and playcounts if I uninstal iTunes 10.4 and then try to reinstall the new version. Does anybody know if I will lose all of that information by uninstalling my current version of iTunes?

I had the same problem. If you have any external devices plugged into USB ports, try unplugging them and then try iTunes again. I had an external hard drive that interferred. Once I unplugged it everything worked great. Only took me 3 weeks to figure it out. I had uninstalled and reinstalled all Apple components 23 times before I stumbled upon the solution for me. I had scoured the internet and tried every suggestion I could (except for clean install of windows).

Good Luck

Had this problem. "sfc \SCANNOW" didn't work for me. Had all the following symptoms:

(1) iTunes couldn't install ... got to some point and then stopped and rolled back.

(2) Had problems installing some other programs as well (but some still could be installed).

(2) "sfc \SCANNOW" returns "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

(3) Under the Services management console (run "services.msc"), noted that Windows Modules Installer was stopped and couldn't be restarted. Error was "Error 126: The specified module is could not be found"

Didn't want to reinstall iTunes or Windows. Read that registry cleaners may mess up worse so didn't try that as well. Tried Windows Updates or reinstallation of MS Visual C++ and other related stuff but all didn't work. At one point, even Window's installations didn't really work properly.

In the end, followed instructions in the link below and it solved many installation problems, which I now suspect mainly involved Setup trying to install windows components (which explains why some installation worked and others didn't): ** WARNING: Procedure involves updating registry, so do so at your own risk. **

If you need help with getting getting the permissions to modify the key, I used these two links:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310426 (Giving yourself the permission)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMBX8UHoXko (Returning the ownership back to TrustedInstaller)

After I did this "sfc \SCANNOW" started to work as wel and told me that there were no problems ... could install iTunes and another programme that I had problems with ...

Am just sharing my experience because it worked for me and ended my frustration ... so hope it is helpful to someone else too...
