I uninstalled all Apple software on Windows 7 64 bit Professional, and everything stayed as it was in 10.4. But at least you should back up your music folder. I can't guarantee that you won't lose something, but my experience was good.

Something plugged into the USB port was a problem for me too. iTunes scans for devices that are plugged into it.
This seems like a common problem. I think it is Microsoft C++ software that is causing the problem. Check Windows Update for optional updates to see if there is an update for this. You could try the System File Checker. Open the Command Prompt Run as Administrator. Enter "sfc /scannow" It takes a while to run, and may reveal if you have any corrupted system files.
