This happend for the iphone 3 update I believe-The support person also told me that it could be almost a week to get everything sorted out and that their computers went down for 3 hours yesterday-ahhh

I am using Win 7 64 bit version. I had the same problems for few days time. I had tried most of the methods described above but still failed.

Today, I had downloaded the "Windows installer cleanup utility 7.2"

see the link here - http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459 or serached in the web

After the installation, I used this program to uninstall all the apple related softwares including Bonjour.

Without restarting the windows, I went straight to install the iTunes64setup. This time it worked.

During the installation, it had some warnings but still the whole iTune 10.5 had installed successfully.

The new iTune can work now. I want to share this experience to all of you and see if it can help those who need.

I had been having the same problem as all of you on my Win 7 64-bit. I tried uninstalling all Apple programs and files on my computer, but no luck. After quite a few hours spent, I figured out that my problem came from downloading the wrong version of iTunes 10.5. I wasn't downloading the version specific to 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista computers. Here's the link:http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1427. It installed perfectly after using the right version and I haven't had any problems with my iPhone or ios 5 yet.

Just wanted to let you all know in case you overlooked the 64-bit link like I did! Good luck!

Hi all, i've had the same problem with the windows installer package on windows XP. Itunes 10.5 failed to install.

The solution that worked for me was :

first, i've terminated in the task manager, the processes beginning with apple or ipod...

Then, in control Panel, i've opened the add/remove progam and choosed to CHANGE (not removing) the apple software update. So, i've repaired it.

After that, i've run the Itunes 10.5 setup file and it worked.

I know the topic was for W7 but i hope this could give you some ideas.

Bye

So I had a problem trying to install 10.5 on Win 7x64 as well as many have as I see. I was already on 10.5 and was trying to install an app that had an error and a solution was to uninstall itunes and everything from Apple in a certain order then reinstall. I followed the instructions which are in all the 10.5 cant install threads, then when I went to install I had the iTunes cant install message box, the one that has no error number just says "installer encountered error before itunes could configured".

I spent HOURS trying to figure out wth the problem was, I did all the different methods posted on these boards that I could find. I already had uninstalled all the Apple Products, I downloaded CCleaner to get rid of the Registry stuff, I deleted the Temp files, did it all to no avail. Then I stumbled upon the solution randomly reading on some other site.

Here it is, if you are having the problem after all the other methods try this:

Goto Start- Control Panel

Add or Remove User Accounts

Create another generic User Account

Download iTunes and Install it there

Switch back to your Regular User Account

Everything should be back on your Desktop

Click iTunes Shortcut

iTunes should load up perfectly including all your Music Playlists Apps ect

I havent deleted the Generic User Account yet but I have a feeling you can get rid of it once iTunes is downloaded. Im just glad I got it back up, I have an iPhone and well the thing can go useless if I cant hook it up to iTunes.

Hope this helps, Good Luck all and God Bless 8)

This is what I did (I called Apple support first by the way, and this is what they told me to do:

Here's the link to Apple Support:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

And here's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

Basically - you can't just uninstall iTunes, you have to uninstall iTunes and all of the iTunes componenents, and this tells you how (and in what order, it is apparently important).

And here is the text:

Summary

Learn how to completely uninstall iTunes, QuickTime, and other essential software components from your Windows Vista or Windows 7 PC.

Products Affected

QuickTime for Windows, iTunes 9 for Windows, iTunes 8 for Windows, iTunes 7 for Windows, iTunes 10 for Windows, Windows, Windows Vista, Windows 7

Overview

In some rare instances, it may be necessary to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and related software components from your computer before reinstalling iTunes. For most technical issues though, reinstalling iTunes is an unnecessary and overused troubleshooting step. If you are directed to reinstall iTunes by AppleCare, a Knowledge Base article, or an alert dialog, you can do so by following the steps in this article.

Notes:

  • iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. If you're unsure how to backup, see iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
  • These steps may take a significant amount of time to complete, depending on your system.

Steps

1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control PanelUse the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:

  1. iTunes
  2. QuickTime
  3. Apple Software Update
  4. Apple Mobile Device Support
  5. Bonjour
  6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects. If you need more detailed steps on removing these components, refer to the following steps:2. Verify iTunes and related components are completely uninstalledIn most cases removing iTunes and its related components from the Control Panel will remove all supporting files belonging to those programs. In some rare cases those though, files may be left behind. After following the previous steps, you should confirm that the following files and folders have been removed. If any are left behind, remove them now:

  • C:\Program Files\Bonjour
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\
  • C:\Program Files\iTunes\
  • C:\Program Files\iPod\ Note: Follow the additional steps at the end of this article if you receive the alert "Cannot delete iPodService.exe: It is being used by another person or program" when trying to delete this folder.
  • C:\Program Files\QuickTime\
  • C:\Windows\System32\QuickTime
  • C:\Windows\System32\QuickTimeVR
If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, you will need to confirm that the following folders have been removed as well:
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod\ Note: Follow the additional steps at the end of this article if you receive the alert "Cannot delete iPodService.exe: It is being used by another person or program" when trying to delete this folder.
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTime
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTimeVR
If you aren't sure how to remove these files, you can follow these detailed steps: 3. Reinstall iTunes and related components After verifying that iTunes is completely uninstalled, restart your computer and then download and install the latest version of iTunes. If the issue you are troubleshooting is not resolved after following these steps, it is not necessary to remove and reinstall iTunes multiple times. Instead, you may find helpful information on the iTunes Support page, such as troubleshooting steps related to specific alert messages.
