iTunes 10.5 does not load shared library files

Since today's update to iTunes 10.5 from 10.4.1. iTunes can no longer access the shared music library I have on my iomega NAS disk. It sees the disk and lists it as a shared library, but when I click on the library it goes into an endless loading cycle. In the past it might take a minute or so to load the library, but since the update, iTunes never actually does load it.

There is no error message, not even an operation time-out. I can't see anything rrelevant in the console. It just goes on for ever trying to load the shared library.

It was loading the shsred library just fine until this evening when the update downloaded.

Any ideas?

Spent an entire day trying to set up my Dlink DNS 320. iTunes server is now enabled, but I'm getting nothing in my iTunes library, just a wheel of death where it's trying to pull the music through.

I've rolled back to 10.4, which saw the music instantly, but soon as I plug my ipad 3 into the PC, iTunes demands that 10.4 won't talk to my ipad. I therefore upgraded to 10.6 but everythings gone again.

I've attempted to log a support call, but the site insists that i need to call their support by phone (which i don't want to). Anyone here managed to log a call by their site / email. Also, has anyone else logged this, and what is their tech supports response?

I also have a DNS-320, and iTunes 10.6.4, and I was having the same problem (including forever spinning wheel of death) - until I deleted from the server a couple of songs with Japanese characters in the ID3 tags. I left it 15 mins for the iTunes server on the DNS-320 to refresh, and now iTunes loads the whole 12,000 track library within about 20 seconds.

So it would be worth searching through your library for any songs with "non-standard" characters in their ID3 tags and either removing them or changing the tags.

(By non-standard, I think we're talking about non-UTF8 ASCII characters, but I'm no expert on that. Obviously Japanese characters aren't non-standard to Japanese people!)

I don't know whether this is a problem with iTunes or with the version of the server software (mt-daapd) installed on the DNS-320 - I don't want to come across as an Apple fanboy (because I'm not) but to be honest I suspect it's the DNS-320 software that's at fault. I've seen blog posts in the past about getting mt-daapd to work on other systems by removing/changing ID3 tags with accented letters from German in them.

Thanks for the feedback mattlancey.

I've copied 1 artist folder, containing 1 album folder, that contains only 1 song, to test your concept. My file structure on my DNS 320 is:

volume_1/music test

and the only file in there is:

volume_1/music test/aerosmith/get a grip/intro.mp3

I've deleted the original path in the ShareCenter and added the new path in the iTunes server folder field. It refreshes fine. However, when i go back to iTunes app i'm stil getting the spinning wheel of death when i select sharecenter on the left hand pane.

I've gone into Edit, Preferences, Advanced and changed my music loaction to \\sharecenter\volume_1\music test but still can't see any music / my nas.

My MP3 tag codepage on my NAS is ISO8859-1 and set to Western European (ISO8859-1).

Any ideas what the heck i'm doing wrong here?

Okay, installed beta firmware v2.03 on my Dlink Dns 320, and now I can finally see all of music on iTunes!

Opened up the iPad, went to the Music, More option and it's all on there. However, as soon as shut down the pc it disappears from my iPad.

How is this designed to work? I assumed the Dlink would serve the music across my wireless network without a pc needing to be turned on, or am I missing something?

Hi mattlancey,

I know where you're coming from re the corrupt / non-standard ID3 tags causing problems, however i'm not sure if it's causing the spinning wheel / unable to read NAS Library issue.

A few months back I had a problem where the itunes server on the NAS would not refresh, it'd get around 70% through and then it would continously loop, even after a reboot. The only way out was to reset the NAS to factory settings or load a saved config that didn't have the itunes server turned on. I fixed this problem by going through all 120 gigs of music & updating the ID3 tags. Once i updated the corrupt / old / non-standard tags the itunes server would refresh (albeit slowly) all 120 gigs no probs.

However the problem with the iTunes application not reading the NAS library still exists. And that problem came about after an iTunes upgrade, where before hand it was working fine.

Anyways, hope this helps someone. I haven't tried rolling back to a previous version of iTunes (always seems to mess up my library somehow) although 10.5 & 10.4 don't work for me. I haven't tried the D-Link beta firmware v2.03 - would rather not go beta, but might try it if a proper fix doesn't come about. This has been broken for me since November 2011! Since then i've been using xbmc to access my NAS music & movies * it works fine, I just prefer iTunes interface for browsing music.

hmmmmm

The dns320 2.03 beta firmware completely fixes the problem. Not noticed any issues whatsoever since with respect to my DNA 320.

As for streaming, I'd still like ideas of how I can stream from my nas without having to have my pc turned. I completely defeats the object - may as well get rid of my iPad and just run iTunes on my laptop.

sorry that i did not read all the comments on this thread (has 16 pages lol) , but i found that it has something to do with the number of media files or the size. iTunes have issues loading large media library from NAS,

I also have iOmega iConnect sharing all the media, and all upnp/dlna media players can see and play it. It is just itunes which is unable to load the media library if it exceeds to some amount. If i reduce the number of audio/video files, iTunes can load and play it wihout issue.

iTunes has probably changed something in the implementation of the DAAP protocol. I originally used firefly mediaserver version svn-1696 that stopped working after update to iTunes 5.x and higher.

In FreeBSD there is a patch that fixes it in the source.

Hope this helps.

I still thinks it is not of this world Apple refuses to share the iTunes change that caused the problem in the first flace.
