Well, last night I re-installed my iTunes with "repair" option. I also changed the cable connecting my iPhone 4 to my laptop. I did check the "sync contacts with Outlook" since that is where I had the latest known copies of my contacts. Results:
- I did get the contacts back... without the ring tones assigned to them ... maybe lost something else, do not know?
- I did get the photos back!!! This is most likely due to re-installing the iTunes? I believe that ticking the outlook to sync the contacts has nothing to do with this. Neither the changing of the cable.
I have NOT tested yet how the "restore" works after this... If it is still giving me the error 11 or not... But it seems that re-installing the iTunes helped a bit (in my case).

Yep, anything that generates this much traffic and confusion so early in the piece represents a massive **** up in my book....
I managed to get contacts back from my computer, although not compete.. I can see the computer, I can't see the cloud, I don't know how to access the cloud so the cloud has been disabled, to take one variable out of the equation....

I had lost my contacts, except for favorites but noticed that when I received a phone call, it showed up as a saved contact so I knew that the contacts were still there but I couldn't see them.
I just hooked my iphone back up to the computer and clicked on my iphone link while in itunes, changed the backup to my computer versus the icloud and then went to the info tab and checked the box to have it sync all my contacts. Everything came back.
I think that there are some glitches with the new ios5 update (well obviously) but don't panic and wipe everything or revert. I think that you can either try what I did or get help from an apple technial support person; I'm sure the contact information is saved somewhere so don't panic until it's really time to and save yourself a little stress.

Thanks for the advice...
After looking around the forum for a bit, that's pretty much what I did: ditch the cloud, go back into itunes and sync my contacts again. some stuff was missing (which surprised me, because I did a sync prior to the upgrade), but I went back into my emails and added a whole bunch of stuff to the address book and did another sync, so I'm back on board again...

Hi all. Hope this works for you. I went to settings on my iphone and opened iCloud and next to contacts I hit the on button then closed out of settings and when I checked all my contacts were back. I am a techno neanderthal but hey it worked for me. Good luck

Solution #6? (in reference to the 5 suggestions in Sean Walther's Blog http://www.seangw.com/wordpress/index.php/2011/10/ios-5-upgrade-lost-my-cont) I appreciate all of your help. My wife was not happy when I upgraded her phone for her yesterday and lost all her contacts. I tried all your options. Nothing worked. iCloud contacts online were empty. Unfortunately we are verizon so we don't have SIM. Replace information on this iPhone was greyed out. We are on Windows XP. Unfortunately she doesn't use Outlook. She uses hotmail, but most of her contacts were not in her WindowLive/hotmail contacts. iCloud contacts were empty. There was nothing in her contacts, text messages were all numbers. There were no restore files in iTunes probably because she had been using her iPhone all this time without ever syncing to iTunes. I finally succeeded when I tried this:
- iTunes -> Devices -> My phone -> Summary tab-> I believe I first changed [ ]back up to iCloud to [x] back up to this computer;
- iTunes -> Devices -> My phone -> Info tab ->
[x] Sync contacts with Windows address book (even though she has never used Outlook Express!) -> apply/sync -> success! After that I was able to uncheck this box and then also change back to [x]back up to iCloud without any problem.

I had the same issue on an iPhone 3GS running OS3.1.3. When I upgraded to OS5, not only did it kill my phone (had to reinstall old battery to get out of Error 29), once I restored the phone with OS5 my contacts were lost. I used a backup file but the Contacts were not there. I don't use iCloud so that was out of the question. I then read on a forum that simply checking the box for syncing Contacts then restoring from the backup with the Contacts could resolve the problem. It worked!
Here's what I did:
1. Created a copy of the backup file that had my Contacts in it
2. Checked the sync Contacts box in iTunes (when the phone is connected go to Info tab)
3. Backed up my iPhone
4. Turned off automatic backup from Preferences>Devices
5. Made sure the sync Contacts box was still checked then restored my iPhone from the backup with my Contacts in it.
6. Smiled gleefully when I saw that Contacts had been restored.
That's what worked for me. Hopefully it can help some of you with this ridiculously frustrating problem.

I have just upgraded my iPhone 3GS from iOS4.3 to iOS5 and I have LOST all of my, CONTACTS, PHOTOS, TEXT messages, MAIL accounts and application data.
I have attempted to restore from previous backup but not successful as there is only 1 prior backup. Even though iTunes said “Backing up iPhone” before the upgrade. I cannot see that backup in the restore list.
HOW ON EARTH can this happen??? All my business contacts of years are LOST. All my photos are LOST.
This is a DEBACLE by Apple. Do they ever test this stuff?? I guess I agreed that they could do this when I accepted the obfuscating “terms of agreement”!!! But this is PREPOSTEROUS. How can a technology company allow this to happen? The upgrade message should say.
There is an OS upgrade to your iPhone. By the way it will delete all of your PHOTOS, CONTACTS, TEXT MESSAGES, EMAIL ACCOUNTS and app data. DO you want to continue???
Who would have GUESSED that Apple decided it was quite OK to DELETE your Intellectual Property without warning?????
This is a CROCK.
Come on Apple???
WHAT ARE YOU DOING??????

I upgraded to IOS5 on my iphone 4 last night. Then this morning I noticed all my contacts were gone! Not happy! When I connected my phone it started syncing straight away and now since the IOS5 upgrade, there seems to be no way to stop it syncing like you used to be able to do on your phone. It seems the only way you can stop it it con shut down itunes!
I then went into 'restore from backup' and in the lost, it didn't have any backups done in the last few days and the most recent one before today was a week ago and any before that were a year and a half ago! So I clicked the one from a week ago which took 2 hours and when I opened the phone again, my contacts were still empty and the last weeks sms messages, photos & whatsapp messages were gone and there was only the one main photo album even though a few were ticked in the photos section on my itunes!
I tried restore from sim, but that was still blank!
I cannot log into icloud as it says that account isn't verified and to check my email, but there are no emails!
In the Info section in itunes, the top section has a tick by 'sync conacts with:' then windows address book, google or yahoo. I looked in the windows address book, but it doesn't have all my contacts there, a lot of contacts with no phone numbers, no addresses and a load of emails contacts. This was no my iphone contacts list!
At the moment the summary at the bottom on what is on my phone has 5.6GB of 'OTHER'! What on earth is that?!
This is really doing my head in an I've wasted mosty of my Sunday trying to sort it out! Just a soke that after a few months these problems still haven't been sorted and so many people are having serious greif! I thought Apple cared about theior customers?!
Someone please help!
