OK, tryed 1234, 12345, windows login, email passwords, changing my iTunes account password, facebook, and every other password I could ever think of... no go.

I echo the frustration of the masses here and express my disappointment in loosing very important data. This is not the first time an Apple OS update has lost my data so I suppose it's shame on me for trusting Apple again.

No question that there needs to be an official response from Apple on this issue.

I kept trying passwords - random and whatever I could think of, turns out that a random password that I no longer use worked... go figure especially since I did not encrypt or set a password for a back-up when updating to iOS 5. I wish you all much luck in working through this and feel strongly that if Apple values their customers and wishes to maintain our loyalty they should correct this issue before continuing with the upgrade. Apple should take note that Google's Android is a force to reckon with.

Don't know if this helps but I've tried loads of solutions and even with a custom password list the elcomsoft couldn't find any results. Some people have noted that it uses a random password frm passwords you've stored on your device so try your facebook password, email account, lock code etc. None worked for me.

After a few days of scouring forums I had to do it a convoluted way in the end.

I installed iFunbox and copied the keychain-2.db file to my PC after making a backup of it in the same directory on the iPhone (var/keychains)

I then deleted the file from my iPhone and reconnected it to iTunes. This meant all passwords had been deleted (albeit temporarily from my iPhone). I then selected the encrypted backup option again and started a backup then cancelled it which created a new keychain-2.db file in var/keychains. I then removed the encrypt option. This asked me for a password but it was set to the new password I'd just entered so the tick was then removed.

I then exported and opened the new keychain-2.db file in exported in sqllite browser (do a search and download it, it's free). I then opened my original file in sqllite browser. The reason I did it this way is because for some reason my keychain files displayed a load of gobble-di-gook in sqllite browser so I couldn't determine what was the itunes password. Maybe because I'm running iTunes 10.5 but people have previously stated that the files are shown in plain English but mine weren't.

I then compared the genp tables in sqllite browser until I found the record that had the same set of symbols in the acct column that as in the new keychain-2.db file I'd created as this would be the iTunes password I'd just created. No other records existed in the new keychain file.

I then deleted that record in sqllite browser, saved and imported back into var/keychains using iFunbox.

The encrypted option is no longer ticked and I can make unencrypted backups. I will definitely not be ticking that box again!!!

I know it sounds really long and laborious but if you follow it step by step it isn't as long as you think. I've no previous experience of this and I found all thge info from scouring various forums and piecing it all together to create my own solution. Also, if you're lucky enough to have your keychains file display as plain English in sqllite browser then you can just delete the record that says it is your itunes backup password.

Hope it makes sense. It really does work!

HI Diesel,

this issue is happening during the upgrade from IOS4 to IOS5, the backup file that is created during the update ends up with a password lock on it that no one has set, im my case it was the local password of a macbook i dont plug this iPad into!?!? there is only one way that it could of gotten that password, and it is so long and complex i dont want to bore you with it.. Anyway, you dont get the options you are talking about until after you have updated iTunes to 10.5.x and have IOS5 on the iDevice connected..

this issue here is when itunes creates the backup of IOS4, then wipes your device and installs IOS5, then when the iPad reboots and reconnects to iTunes and tries to restore, there is a password on the backup?? also the device hasnt been disconnected from the PC the whole time.. it is very confusing..

Hi Everybody,

I guess it is of no help for anybody when I tell you that I just experience the same issue. All your tricks haven't got me out of this problem.

I just can wait is someone posts succesfuller instructions or if we get an update from apple. What I just hate that there is no offical statement or information in the net.

Had the same problem as everyone else. Tried every password I've ever used on this computer, including all of my husband's passwords. As a last ditch effort, I tried my password for my computer at work (not an Apple, and I've never plugged my phone into that computer) -- it worked! Hallelujah! All I can figure is that I logged into my work computer at home through GoToMyPC (a Citrix program). So, my work password was the last password I typed into this keyboard before updating my phone. Perhaps that is why iTunes automatically used that password.

It sounds like this was an anomaly. My sympathies to everyone else still trying to unlock their freaking iPhone backup file. How terribly frustrating.

What a headache this has been. Fortunatley, my iPhone updated to iOS5 last month with no problem. The iPad however was a different story and I've been working off and on since then to fix it.

Since I didn't have a lot of material on the iPad that I couldn't duplicate I almost set it up as a new iPad, but after reading this thread (and a couple of others on the same thing) I decided to go through every password I've used in the past several years (thank you LastPass) and just past the halfway mark of 388 sites I hit the correct one.

I never set up this simple 4-letter word as a pw to encrypt my back up. It was however, a pw that I had used on my last computer (a couple of years ago) to sign in (in addition to some random site). Since then our company has created a much more stringent pw policy and the simple 4-letter pw had to go. I havnen't used that pw for quite some time.

Very unfortunate that this has happened.

Wife and I both have iPhone 3GS and the latest version of iTunes. I have a Vista PC and she has Mac Book Pro. My IOS 5 upgrade was fine except I chose to use the cloud and then all my contacts were gone. I had to search for the solution and luckily found the turn off iCloud turn back on iCloud trick to bring them back. My wife's upgrade hit this encrypted backup password issue. I tried changing our shared iTunes password as suggested here and it did not work. I tried ever permutation of passwords and numeric PINs/keys to no avail. Finally after overhearing me read about someone trying their work PC password she gave it a try and it worked. This is scary considering she works part time for a large university system and can only think of maybe one time she even attempted to login to her work PC from her Mac since she has a dedicated work PC which requires VPN connection. I don't think any public or private company/institution would be too pleased to learn that Apple is snagging and somehow storing their passwords.

I tried updating to iOS5 on my iPhone directly, but within hours it started showing ph#'s and no names on texts and calls which is super annoying since I screen both. So I plugged into my PC to backup and restore thinking it would fix it and got magically encrypted like so many others. I still haven't guessed the password. I even tried a bunch of my husband's that he has used on this machine with no luck. I WAS able to restore to my last iCloud savepoint from yesterday, so all my apps, etc are back, but the annoying issue with the ph#'s is back as well. I am still trying to crack the code.

I suppose the moral is not to plug-in until Apple announces a fix.

IOS 5 Update encrypted my backup, WTH is the password????
