Speaking for myself I did wait. Not 4 months but I didn't jump on the update imediately. I have never expereinced this type of problem before. Therefore I had my phone organized and was relying on my backup to be restored once I udated. So "people get so mad" when then are unable to retrieve contacts, pics and other important material when the almighty Apple has a feature that is supposed to prevent this from happening. "People get so mad" because this seems to be a matter that Apple has chosen to completely ignore or just hasn't gotten around to responding to. Apple holds themselves up to a higher standard and as a result their customers hold them up to a higher standard! When they are unable to perform according to that standard in which they have set, yessssss "people get so mad"!!!

Now if anyone has had any other success with resolving the matter and will be posting in regard to SOLUTIONS it will greatly be appreaciated.

Thanks!

I was puzzled by this for a long time, until i read a post in one of the other threads here.

The guy said that:

Either you forgot you checked the box (i didn't)

Or you just forgot your password (i haven't, as I didn't set one)

Or you connected your iOS device to a corporate Exchange profile (a-HA!)

So i tried with the password I use(d) for my corporate email, and the password was accepted.

Maybe this helps someone :-)

Well Apple/iTunes has really dropped the ball with this one.

At the VERY LEAST they should have a way to reset the password and send it to your itunes account email address.

This is probably just a money making scheme, forcing pople to use the iCloud and pay for extra backup space.

I've been a huuuuuge Apple guy, but this has REALLY turned me off.... I won't be convincing people to go Apple anymore. Not that they care. lol

I upgraded to OS 5.1 (probably the last to do so) and could NOT restore my backup due to the password problem.

After trying dozens and dozens of different passwords, I went to the ITunes Store, went into my account, and changed the password.

I went back to the password box which was still open, put in the new password, and IT WORKED!

During the restore, the phone rebooted and interrupted the restore, but gives you the option to continue, and it just completed as I type this.

Thanks to the poster on the second page of this thread that mentioned this fix... IT WORKED FOR ME!

Its funny because although I have moved on without resolving this issue that took place almost a year ago I still hold hope when I get an email stating that someone posted here. I have since taken other measures to back up my data but still would love to retrieve my data that I lost with this APPLE screw up. I tried what the person in the previous post said but I was unable to get into the Apple Store and keep the pw window open at the same time. But for the **** of it I changed my pw and then went back in to try and restore the back up and again NOTHING!

This is one of the issues that is seriously making me consider not getting the new iphone in a couple of weeks. I have never been a fan of Apple and this is the perfect example why. Thanks to everyone that has shared their sucesses with the issue.

My husband does all of my backups and software upgrades for me, so I initally became very angry with him when he updated my software to ios 5.1.1 and we realized that the backup had been password protected and I was unable to restore my ipad using the backup file. I have spent all day trying to come up with a way to crack this **** password...even went so far as to run Elcomsoft to crack the password (which said it was going to take 4 days to complete).

We called Apple Phone Support today and they were no help, claiming that it wasn't a known issue. Then, I came on these forums and learned that it's happening to MANY MANY people.

So, after hours of trying every password my husband could think of and anything I remembered associating with the ipad and all the apps I've ever downloaded, I started to get a little loopy and accidentally put in a password that makes no logical sense. AND IT SCARES THE **** OUT OF ME that it worked. The password is the current password to unlock windows on my WORK computer...my work computer where I don't even have itunes installed....my work computer that I've never plugged the ipad into. My husband has NO IDEA what the password to unlock my work computer is - he really couldn't care less what the password is. What I want to know is how the F did the ipad have that password?

I can guarantee you, this - my husband didn't accidentally encrypt the backup with my windows password for my corporate laptop. I already apologized to him, but I really feel like Apple should too because I know this wasn't an encryption that he manually setup and no backups before this one have ever been encrypted.

Diesel bdub: I am astounded at your statement, "Geesh - talk about irate over a minor little detail." Can't you read the anguish in all of these emails, with people who have lost all of their business and personal contacts, videos, photos, critical notes and other such records? You must not work for a living and/or use mobile devices as a key part of your work .... otherwise you would not be so blind to the devastating effect of such a glitch. I am one of the victims of this Apple snafu. I have over 3,000 business contacts including emails and phone numbers on my iPhone 4s and my iPad 3, and hundreds of photos and business notations and files. The auto-encryption glitch occurred several months ago. I cannot back up anything that has been added since then, and worst of all, I can't ever restore the contents to another iPhone or iPad or other device if I lose or damage these or need to buy a replacement (which WILL NOT be an APPLE). I lose sleep over this as do many others do. I can do a quasi 'backup' to the iCloud .... but even that cannot be restored in a digital format to any device. Unlike what I was told by an Apple rep, the encryption is carried into the iCloud. Like hundreds/thousands of other victims of this Apple glitch worldwide , I am trapped. THIS IS NOT a "minor little detail." It is a disaster for many of us.

I feel your pain. My best advice is to try every password you have used even if you do not think you have used it on your PC/MAC where you run iTunes. Ours turned out to be a password my wife only uses at her work which is a major university. This was shocking that her mac had somehow stored this password. We could not think of any time when she had used it to login except maybe once to check webmail or to attempt to VPN via the mac.

Anyway, it definitely had no correlation to iTunes backups. Keep trying them all and good luck.
