Using my own domain with iCloud email

Still works on all my devices running a variety of OS (albeit antiquated):

• El Cap v10.11.6

  Mail v 9.3 (3124)

• iOS 8.3
• iOS 9.3.5
• iOS 7.1.2

Biggest pain is that of the 3 accounts I do this with I have one Hotmail/Outlook account that has such draconian SPAM filters, I may either have to retire that account, or look for another solution. There's no way to disable it entirely on the MS side and let iCloud deal with it, and just no good way in an iOS app (IMO) to deal with false positives if I went straight Exchange. All false positives need to be corrected or whitelisted on the Outlook.com site. Grrrr.

same problem ... i think actually there's no way to keep own adress for outgoing mails. at least if incoming and outgoing mail should use the same mailbox.

the only way seems to set up another account for sending mails via your own imap-server and forwarding incoming mails to your icloud-account.

or you consider to use gmail. google allows sending over own adresses ......

Is there any reasonable way to use it with iCloud?

For what purpose? iCloud does nothing for external email accounts. It just provides you with a new IMAP & Push capable email account with an @me.com domain (if you want one).

I do this with Gmail and it works really well.

Please tell us how did you manage this throug Gmail. I did the same when I had my MobileMe account but can't find the options in iCloud!

I think Topmounter ment he use Gmail only, no iCloud at all.

There is no way to use iCloud with your own email domain. Apple don't want the professional users. Only private users are welcome, I guess.

I was my own domin with mobileme, it sent and recieved from and external domain. Snce moving to iclould it continues to recieve mail from external server but will not send with that address, only the me.com address.

Actually not so - there IS a way to use iCloud email with your own email domain. You do it by using fastmail.fm's SMTP servers to send outbound mail via Mobile Me (and now iCloud) using your choice of domain name. I've been doing it before and since the migration to iCloud and it works perfectly.

Basically, you pay a onetime (lifetime) fee to Fastmail to let you set up an account. They give you a special SMTP server that lets you use your choice of email address when sending, and then changes it to another. So now I use forwarding to send my inbound to icloud.com (using forwarding from my work domain) -- that part's easy for anyone to do -- then I reply from my me.com address but have my settings so that outbound mail uses Fastmail's SMTP server instead of Apple's. Since I'm registered with fastmail, the fastmail server sees the traffic and says basically: "If an email from ed****@me.com asks to be sent, then send it as edsworkaddress@edsworkdomain.com."

Please not that we are talking about iCloud, not MobileMe. Your way worked in MobileMe but no longer with iCloud.

iCloud doesn't do that. It's not a backup/sync service for external email accounts, and technically cannot be. Your existing email provider should provide that functionality for its own accounts.

That's correct. Using a "Send From" address to send from a non @me.com or @mac.com email address is not a feature of iCloud.

My apologies -- but the weird thing is it DID work a few times. But I think I see why:

The configutraton for all this used to be to turn off the SMTP server for Mobile Me in advanced settings, and instead add, and then choose, the fastmail server for outbound. And the fastmail server is still in the list, but now you can't turn off iCloud as the primary SMTP. The iCloud SMTP switch is there, but it is slightly greyed out, and can't be moved.

So my lucky successes must have worked when iCloud wouldn't send (which was happening a lot at first, when Apple servers were still funky, I suppose), so it went to the fastmail server as the next available.

Does that make sense?

I have found away that I think may help you.

Background as to why I use it. I have a @me.com address and Gmail but my contacts only know my Gmail account but I wanted to use cloud email so it would sync properly across all my devices, MBP, iPad and iPhone and also have the push email that the previous Mobile Me had and iCloud has now

So what I have done on my MBP is this. I use Mail.

You need to go into system preferences and select iCloud...in here turn off Mail and Notes.

Now open Mail and select preferences. Then select accounts. Delete all accounts there.

Now set up a new account by pressing the + button. After that enter the details as if you were setting up to use your Me.com account and press CREATE.

You now go to a page where you can edit all your mail settings manually. In the first section of the page you have:

Account Type - This should say - iCloud IMAP

Description - This can be described by you to be anything

Email Address - This is the email address you want people recieving the email to see

Full Name - As it says put your name

Incoming Mail Server - If you want the mails to come from iCloud then use: p99-imap.mail.me.com

User Name: The user name of the icloud

Password: the password of icloud

**Note** In this section you are putting in where you want the mails to come from. In this case I wanted the mails to come from iCloud so I forwarded all my mails from my Gmail account to my @me.com address, and then got iCloud to deliver them.

Outgoing Mail Server: Now this is the interesting part. I have changed this to the GMAIL server on my Gmail account. I have done this as I want my mails saved also at my Gmail account so by routing them through Gmail this happens as well as recording the sent mails at iCloud.

On iPhone and iPad you just add iCloud and then turn off mail again. Now you set up a mail account using the other option.

1. IMAP Account Information - In here i put the information that i want my contacts to see

2. Incoming Mail Server - I put the iCloud information

3. Outgoing Mail Server - I put the Gmail server

So in short now, i get complete syncing of my mails across my 3 iDevices and have the extra back up of iCloud, but my clients do not see my @me.com (iCloud) email address, they see my Gmail address that I have been using for many years so there is no confusion for them.

I really hope you get all of that, this is the first time I have helped on here so am very much a newbie but it seems to be working for me.

Outstanding! This approach works perfectly. I was tracking toward this solution but you nailed down the details.

I didn't see that you must turn off mail on the iPad otherwise to avoid having two (duplicate) accounts, although you will have a choice in this case of sending from either (1) your personal domain or (2) your @me.com domain. Some people might like that option.
