Problems installing iOS 5 on iPad

I keep getting this "an error occured while backing up this iPad (-48). Would you like to continue to update this iPad? Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPad?". Please help.

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.3

UPDATE:

I just hit the Restore instead of Update button.

Figuring a Restore might make things go smoother tomorrow.

(Of course hours ago the update had downloaded and was ready to go)

It took about half an hour to restore (contacts, apps, etc)

When I turned the iPad on It restored ok and. viola, it is now on ios5 !!!!!

I cancelled the Tech call for tomorrow.

If I hit "restore", doesn't that mean I have to re-install my apps and re-sync my music and photos? I'd rather avoid that if possible.

I have had no luck at all since 2:00am EST today. Same errors as everyone else, same locked up backups, exact same issues. But, it appears that others are starting to work. What do I do different? I just rebooted (again), and was going to try and connect and start the "backup" process again and let it do it's thing. Are there any work arounds yet?

I had synced earlier today so at worst I figured I would restore then backup to that.

That keeps your apps, contacts, etc.

When I hit restore I didnt even get to the part to chose a backup file, it just went straight to ios5.

Everything is as it was, all apps are there, just had to reset my sign in password & fiddle with my (multiple) google calendars.

Good Luck.

I have the same problem. Except in my case I tripped over the cord and knocked my iPad out while it was restoring. Now nothing will sync except for those items as you describe. Apps that didn't completely restore never restored the next time I synced or even continued restore. Subsequent syncs after making settings didn't work either. It would say sync completely but It had done nothing

Same problem here. In fact, I had the same issue when earlier updating to the 4.3.5 release. This iOS5 update required an update to iTunes, and now my formerly working backup process no longer works. There is an Apple support topic on how to uninstall all Apple and itunes-related s/w and reinstall, but this has not solved the problem this time.

My iTunes is completely frozen/unresponsive at the moment. (Locked up at "Syncing Jim's iPad" Step 1 of 5").

When I had tried to access Help/iTunes help I received a "Your computer is not connected to the internet" message, which is a bit suspect since here I am typing like crazy on an Apple website, presumably on the internet.

I've tried unloading my antivirus, disabling Windows Firewall, uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes with latest release, and all it can do is freeze up during the Sync/Backup.

Yucch. Doing the iPad restore waltz, btw, is not a very friendly option since it takes FOREVER to reinstall all the missing apps. Criminy.

For the iPad I suggest clicking the download and not the 'download with update'. Pretty obvious there would be download issues. There can't be nearly enough servers for the demand. That way it syncs, takes a backup and downloads without affecting the backup. The backup (in Windows 7) is in c:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\. iTunes does not take multiple backups and overwrites the backup with each sync. So if you start to install IOS5 and it fails, or you don't like it after install, and you have sync'd .. no valid backup. That might be why some are having trouble. Take a backup of that directory before install of IOS5 to play it safe. You can always restore the old one. (You can also turn off automatic syncing in 'preferences').

That's what my intuition tells me and I am doing. Download shows 20 hours and has failed 3 times with network timeout errors. I will wait .. its not that urgent that I want to screw things up.

However, I found this via Google:

http://techsie-buzz.com/mobile-news/ios5-ipsw-direct-download-links.html

These downloads are 700mb. This is from Apple servers so it may not be much faster. Read carefully. For IPAD 1 and 2 there are different links for wifi and 3g versions.

For me the IPAD2 WIFI took less than 30 minutes (i downloaded it in error). The 3G version is taking 5 hours! (but less than itunes)

Caveat emptor!
