Problems installing iOS 5 on iPad

I keep getting this "an error occured while backing up this iPad (-48). Would you like to continue to update this iPad? Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPad?". Please help.

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.3

Luckily, it was nothing more than a re-synch. Took awhile, did the full backup and then restored the apps. I'm really interested in what exactly happened. When I left it last night, all the applications were on the desktop and it was restoring the music. This morning, however, when I re-synched, it went back and did all the pictures and every application.

Just glad it's back to normal. Painful, but it's done.

hi deaconbmw,

i seem to be having the same problem as you. it got stuck in a recovery loop though i can now push it into dfu mode and it gets recognized by itunes then. if i try to restore it it restores the ipad software, verifies the software and repeatedly fails while trying to "restore the firmware". i dont know if this is still a server issue but i doubt it.

if you (or anyone else for that matter) come across any solution from the recovery loop that you're stuck in, please do let me know. this is extremely harrowing. u wait so long for ios5 and when it finally comes it bricks ur ipad. ridiculous.

Also stuck in the recovery loop, getting the unable to restore error message. I took iPad to the apple store and they couldn't recover either. the guy tried once, and then offered the solution of just buying a new iPad. I was quite disappointed in that cop out answer as the customer service there is usually excellent. I called Apple Care (from the store) and they opened a ticket and acknowledged that there were some problems and they were aware and seeking a solutuion.

Sounds like there are some serious server side delivery problems. Hope they are resolved soon. I'm going to try again tomorrow.

But I feel less alone now.

Hi folks!) My situation is here: i ve upgraded iPhone4, iPhone3gs, iPad2 and stuck with iPad!)

I ve started as usual - use "download only" upgrade. when downloading was finished, then i start upgrading my iPad. Then, after significant amount of time i ve got "Unable to restore. Unknown error (1)". That's it. iPad now shows iTunes logo, and i try about 8 times already - no luck! I m constantly getting error 1 in the second part of update process.

What i already done:

* reboot my mac

* migrate from mac mini to my MBAir

* try start update in DFU mode

* authorize/logint to iTunes on mac

* download firmware directly and try alt-restore

So, i m not alone!)

What is the saying, patience my a__, I'm going to kill something between two buzzards waiting for a meal. Patience is really the answer to this, the servers are overloaded and problems from end user to mainframe. I waited overnight with my Ipad locked up and not responding. This morning I restarted the computer and plugged in the ipad and it was immediately recognized. The night before it did not show up in devices in Itunes. I "restored" and all progressed and is AOK now.

There was a secondary issue of the icloud server rejecting my password but that resolved itself once I changed the password in settings.

Hang in there...

Deacon

I just updated my iPad and had no problems at all. The first thing i did was ensure I had the latest versions of Safari and iTunes. Then I backed up my iPad. Once that was done I clicked check for updates for your ipad. At first i didnt think it worked because i got a screen that said "restoring ipad from backup". but when that was done I had iOS5 on it. After that it restored all my music, photos and contacts, and apps. in all it took about and hour and a half to complete.

OK, so i had the same problem, Ipad2 would download the IOS5 file fine but would get hung up for hours (6+ hrs) in the "backing up" status. I cancelled and reupdated at least 7-8 times and nothing ever changed. That is until I realized that I had never "backed up" my ipad2 ever. So i right clicked on the device in itunes app, in the drop down there is a "Back up" option. I let the ipad backup FIRST prior to trying to install the new IOS5. For any of you out there like me, i had never plugged in my ipad since getting it started out of the box, so backing it up was a foreign concept. Well, after I backed it up, I also transferred all apps and other media using itunes. THEN i finallyclicked "Update" again and everything went very smooth! NOTE: when you back up your ipad2 manually for that first time, it does take a while, maybe 30 minutes but you can see if moving. Hope that was a clear explanatino cause nothing else was working for me!

I had a similar problem last night. I downloaded the 700 MB+ upgrade. iPad started the backup process and then iOS5 installation. When I tried to restore from the last back up, I got -32 error. No matter what I did I kep t getting the same.

I rebooted the computer and tried to sync my iPad. It is now restoring my apps and books but my wireless and e-mail settings settings are reset.

I have a feeling there are glitches with the upgrade. It may be a good idea to wait for a while before upgrading to iOS for the ones who are thinking about upgrading.

Now I have second thoughts about upgrading my iphone 4 at this time.

Cheers

I do not quite understand your post. The first time you plug the Ipad in, it automatically syncs and takes a backup unless you have specifically turned this off in iTunes. Backups do not backup music and media and is not very large unless you have a humungous number of apps I guess. (mine is 125mb). It is unlikely to take anything like 30 minutes. If you had the option turned off, and never synced, then you would not have had the apps and other media in iTunes to transfer. How do they get there??

Would you care to explain in more detail? Perhaps you did have a backup and never realized it. In that case your 'solution' does not seem to make sense. I'm confused.

In my case I synced and backed up and refused the download when it was offered to be safe. So I knew I had a backup and all the media and apps in iTunes. Then I plugged in again and when offered the download I accepted with update. I copied this backup to another directory as itunes overwrites backups and there is no safety in that. During this process, it did not back my Ipad up again so not sure the update does backup first. My backup was dated before the update. I backed up manually after a successful download and install this morning.

So everybody seems to be seeing something a little different.

I never had any issues after backing up and syncing before allowing the update, and not together with. I did not try it, but the separate download seems to reset the ipad to factory settings and you have to use the backup and the sync to get it the way it was. I was not willing to test that.

Thanks

It took about 2 hours for my iPad (original) to download IOS5 yesterday. I had had trouble the day before. In talking to Apple Care (who worked with me for 2 hours), you must do all your software updates on your computer before you connect your device to it. Make sure you do the backup in itunes & it should go through OK. My husband's iPad 2 only took about 3/4 hour due to the faster chip. It did take me a couple hours before I was able to move everything to iCloud. Everything is working great on my iPad & I now look forward to receiving my new 4S phone today!
