Problems installing iOS 5 on iPad

I appreciate that and I was trying to understand how it all works. I have an IPAD 2 and we are seeing different things. (i have a 64 buit Win7 PC). Mine works the way the article I posted reads which is that backups do not backup media, and a backup overwrites a previous backup. I'd REALLY like to understand how to get multiple backups saved with a '1' appended to the name. I sure would like that option but cannot find it. However, there is not one compressed file. I have one backup directory named \a7d8675ccc9b1f8246a2f7535f60ff650c12c93f\ and it does not change with eack backup and nothing is appended. Inside are 3337 separate files. So which old file are you describing with a '1' appended? Are you using some other software or do you click 'Back Up' on the right click menu of the IPAD showing under 'devices' on the home screen of iTunes? Here is a screenshot. I still can't get itunes to see the Ipad. It locked solid when trying to update to IOS5 and just has the itunes and cable logo on it. Been like that for hours. Tried reinstalling itunes, pressing all the buttons. Contacted Apple who don't seem to work after 5pm on fridays. Been on all the support pages and forums.....HELP!

i have had the same problem peter. i went to the apple service center here in india and they managed to restore it to 4.3.5. i tried to update it to ios 5 again once i got home and again it got stuck in recovery mode, so i went back once again to them. theyve told me to wait 2-3 days and retry saying its a problem with apples servers.

i dont understand why almost everyone else has managed to update their ipads at home and people like us are facing this issue. if u do have any updates let me know on how to solve it.

I was finally able to get it done after numerous errors, I restored my iPad (1) from an old back up, newer ones failed.

Now here's more bad some news --- some of the apps do not function well at all under IOS5. The ipad1 is much slower. This is a pretty bad release, not up to Aples usual high standards.

If I had it to do over again, I'd wait for a few release fixes before going to Ios5

I'm getting the same -1303 error. It was in the middle of doing the backup before the install when the error popped up. Ipad 16GB (nearly full) and Windows XP backup up to a disk with plenty of space.

Note that a backup done with sync works just fine. It's just a backup during the IOS5 install process that fails.

I guess there is no hope of getting support from Apple on this, eh?

My issue is first it stalled on back up and I restarted....3 days ago. Next it got through that and comes up with ERROR (-10). I have done this 7 or 8 times and really frustrated. I am 3 months and a few days an owner so I cannot call without paying. The APPLE store is 40 miles away and I guess if I don't get this solved I will have to drive there. I don't know how they can solve it when my back up is on my itunes on my home computer though. Anyway...I get to the restore and it is almost done and it give me that error. It tells me my ipad2 was disconnected during it, which it was not.

I have been restoring from itunes. I would like to know if I restore as new ipad will my back up be saved still, including all of my ipad2 photos...I have many I don't want to lose. I realize I may anyway as I don't see them saved on itunes (remember, new to APPLE and not sure).

I give up.....almost.

Well, dont give up quite yet. I am not an expert myself but I can tell you what I have and see if that helps. When you sync your Ipad you have the option to sync pictures with the IPAD. If you click the device in iTunes across the top you will see Summary, Info, Apps, Music etc. The last one is Pictures. Have you ever sync'd pictures? The checkbox has to be on. Not sure what the default is. If you click the pictures tab, you have the option to sync all pictures or certain folders i.e. albums. If you've ever sync'd all photos and don't have albums (which I assume as a newbie) then your camera roll will be in the folder shown in the 'Sync Photos From' dropdown. I assume you have not specified a folder so the default is in the itunes folder under 'pictures'. The camera roll is in a directory called 'IPOD Photo Cache'.

You can't see them in iTunes so you'll have to use Windows explorer or the Mac equivalent.

Check that .. and pray. If they are there they will not be lost. The way to create albums is to create a directory (folder) under pictures and move the pictures you want and resync. I haven't tried to recreate camera roll with a sync, but i assume it will. This also the way to move photos you have on your PC to the IPAD if you want that. Copy them into a directory(s) you create

If you have never sync'd, then the question is can you abort, and is the iPad sync'able in its state. If so. check the sync photos checkbox, sync and voila!

The non expert part of me *thinks* that if you restore as new IPAD then if you have a valid sync (which I dont think is a backup for the media part but may be for the apps part) then you have to use sync again to get all content back which is teh way to get pictures back. They are not in the backup to my knowledge but only via sync.

Post again if I can help or explain further. I attach my directory image if that helps to understand.

**EDIT** I got it to work from iTunes 10.5 and Windows 7 64 bit here's how...

BEFORE DOING THIS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD BACKUP AND SYNCH!

1) Disconnect all USB devices from your computer.

2) Open the Windows 7 Task Manager.

3) When you connect your device you will see the "AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe", that's normal.

4) When you go through the steps to start the update in iTunes you'll see a new task in the task manager. "AppleMobileBackup.exe *32" This program seems to be the problem child. Terminate it. I was never able to get past the backup part of the update until I did this.

5) Now with that out of the way everything proceeds as normal. I did get an error during the firmware update and had to retry a few times. This was where I found out I had to disconnect all other USB devices.

6) When done I had a brand new (wiped) iPad connected to iTunes and was able to restore it from the backup I had made previously (outside the iOS 5 backup.)

**EDIT 2** Restoration began around 6:30 AM and finished around 2:30 PM. I find that absolutely none of my apps or folders or music have come back. Doing a manual synch now. Seems like an awfully long time to just synch photos and notes. The manual synch of all apps and music took another few hours.

All told, total time for the update and restoration was just about 10 hours.

I do like the tabbed browsing in Safari now though! Much better than the pseudo multi-tasking before.

Every time I try to update my iPad2 I go through this hassle, EVERY TIME! Uninstall iTunes, re-install iTunes, re-uninstall, re-re-install over and over, delete the back-ups, do this, do that, until finally it takes about a week later. APPLE *****! I'll take a PC over Apple any day. I hate when they update the iOS, and I won't update any apps from my PC, I'll do it with the iPad and WiFi connection, anything to avoid connecting my iPad with iTunes on my PC. Vexing, vexing, vexing.

I can't comment on why it took so long, but I can say for the people who read these posts that Apple clearly states that backups do NOT backup media like folders; camera roll; music; video's; books etc. I posted their quote earlier in this discussion. Apps are not backed up either, only their data and settings. They are in the 'Mobile Applications' subdirectory if iTunes, eg with an .ipa extension. Mine are 1.2gb. This is a way to also see how big each app is if you are space constrained. Websters Dictionary is 140MB for example. It seems the only way to restore those is via a manual sync and so it is not surprising that you had to do that. It has to be that way.

I keep being surprised that folks are surprised.

My backup is only 120mb and my IPAD is using 5GB of its 32GB. My iTunes folder is 4.5GB. It's clear that most of it is not backed up. Golden rule is to back AND sync before doing anything that will alter the device. Then if you have to restore as new iPAD, you can restore backup and resync to get it back the way it was. Might have to enter things like password.

Hopefully people will read this this time.

I restored and restored on my Ipad 2, got most of my apps but no pictures, is there anyway to get them back? I am so frustrated I want to cry...

Having spent most of the day trying to get my iPad 1 out of a recovery loop and reading that it was a problem with apple server response, I decided to stop iTunes talking to them. I switched off my WiFi connection during the Update and Restore cycle and it worked!

I was then able to restore properly from my iTunes back-up as normal.
