Problems installing iOS 5 on iPad

I keep getting this "an error occured while backing up this iPad (-48). Would you like to continue to update this iPad? Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPad?". Please help.

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.3

For all of you who are opting to use iCloud for the first time after installing iOS 5 and normally sync with PC and Outlook 2007 or above, I would highly advise you to download iCloud Control Panel from the Apple site before creating any new calendar or contact data and before syncing for the first time using iCloud. This control panel is also a plug-in for your outlook so that any changes on outlook or on the cloud cross over (talk to each other) to each other.

You never made copies of your photos onto your computer?

You should transfer them to your computer often, and then just sync your photos from that folder.

As far as transferring pictures TO your PC FROM the Ipad2 (in my case) with Windows 7, I have a done a lot of testing with the new IOS5. As far as I can tell, only pictures taken with the device can be uploaded. So pictures to the iPad using Dropbox; iCloud or services like that cannot be re-uploaded.

Having said that, it appears to me that syncing photos is a one-way sync operation, from the PC to the Ipad. I cannot get pictures taken on the Ipad to sync to the PC. I thought the camera roll was synching, but I was wrong. There is an 'IPOD Photo Cache' but there are no jpg's in there. I also took a photo with the IPAD and moved it to a new album with the new features of the Photo app. I then sync'd. This new album was NOT uploaded to my Pictures folder. The new IPAD IOS5 user guide does not even mention this. It only talks about the optional camera attachment kit.

I did some research and found this article:

This shows that you have to use Autoplay to upload your photos. I tested this and it works, but only from the camera roll and not from any created albums, so don't delete any photos from the camera roll until you have uploaded.

This goes against conventional wisdom of the sync process and surprised me. I always assumed my camera roll was syncing .. I never tested it!! Sync is also dangerous in that if you delete on the PC and resynch, it will be gone.

(Note sync may restore the camera roll in the event of a problem. I have not tried that. I am talking about making sure you can access them on the PC later, or in the event of an issue and you lose them).

Another knock against Apple .. how convoluted can they make it?

Another option is to use a service like DropBox to upload photos to your PC. iCloud claims to do it as well, but only 1000 photos (quite a lot I think) but only for 30 days and then they are gone. Make sure you transfer them out on your PC if you use this. Sync does not do it.

Dropbox is great, but one photo at a time.

My iPad went through the whole process of the restore and it was only at the end of the restore that iTunes gave me the error message.

I assumed that the install was working as far as the iPad was concerned, but a confirmation from the apple servers was at fault and failing to confirm the installation was complete, causing the endless loop. Switching off the WIFI connection on my laptop, seemed to force the process to complete without seeking a confirmation form the Apple servers.

I then was able to use the iPad's Wifi to confirm its status with Apple servers. The iPad then asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up, and 2 hours later my iPad was back on using IOS 5.

The break in internet connection clearly managed to break the loop as far as iTunes was concerned.
