iOS 5 - iPad could not be restored

I've tried several times to update my iPad 2 to iOS 5.

It took forever to download the software. I updated iTunes to the latest version, rebooted the computer and went about updating my iPad.

After iTunes reported it was backing up my iPad, it attempted to restore the software but failed with the message "The iPad "Ezlivin's iPad" could not be restored. An internal error occurred."

***? What "internal error"?

I've tried this several times with the same failure message.

Next time why not give me a Blue Screen of Death with incomprehensible textual gibberish? It'll make as much sense....

The short answer: it's annoying but be persistent and keep trying. It will eventually work. It appears like it's some sort of server-side bottleneck that causes it to fail miserably, but eventually (10ish tries here) it will work.

be patient. Try later. I had the same problem. I updated my iPod Touch to IOS5 and it is ok. Tried my iPhone 4 and it failed. tried 5 times kept failing. Finally it worked. I noticed a message in the iTunes window that said "Verifying iPhone restore with Apple". I think the network was busy and this was timing out.

Getting the same error now with no error code (was getting the code before). Ironically I had already downloaded the update earlier, so why the F does it still need to contact the update servers when it's already on my local PC? Also, why the F does it keep backing up the iPad when I already have a backup on my PC? Can we not skip that part, Apple? Totally stupid the way they design these updates.

Hey guys, I have managed to update my iPad 1.

Pls make sure you have done the following before you start updating your iPad 1 or 2:

1. Stop all the program running behind eg. Double click on your home button and close all program.

2. Ensure your Firewall is OFF

3. Update will goes smoothly unless the traffic at gs.apple.com is busy. Try again later and you will get it through

Be patience.

I got the same error on my original iPad with no error code. Tried everything with no success.

I then give my iPhone 4 a try and got a fail too but at least the error message was helpful "The iPhone <my iphone name> cannot be restored at this time because the iphone update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable" and on the bottom in fine print "please try again later" so looks like there are server issues.

Of course I am wondering what Apple was thinking releasing Lion 10.7.2, iOS 5 and Aperture update all at the exact same time. Geez, of course their servers will be slammed.. What a huge screw up... Steve is rolling over in his grave for sure.

Guess we just keep trying..

Apples servers are maxed out; took me about 45 attempts to get it to kick off the upgrade; 3200 errors, internal errors, incorrect firmware errors.

Dont worry about restarting the ipad or mac/pc or editing the hosts file or turning off the firewall etc etc; thousands of people are having the same issue. Apple have just underestimated the sheer amount of concurrect people attempting to upgrade.

Bothe my iPhone 3GS and original iPad are running iOS 4.3.5, I've upgraded iTunes to 10.5 and my MBP to 10.7.2.

When trying to upgrade each, I got the error: :The iPad chris's iPad could not be restored. An internal error occurred."

I've quit all apps running and I've restarted both the iPad and iPhone by holding the Home and Sleep buttons till the devices fully quit (i.e not with the slider) and I still get the same error on each device.

What to do?

Not sure it will work for everybody, but here are the steps I took to update my iPad 2:

1. Stopped every application from running on iPad.

2. Shut down iPad and Mac, disconnect USB from iPad (no other USB devices running to computer).

3. Made sure computer was plugged into Ethernet, not wireless (don't know why, but for some reason mine worked when the Ethernet cable was plugged in, and failed at least 5 times with wireless).

4. Power up both iPad and Mac.

5. Plug iPad into Mac, open iTunes.

6. Delete all backups of iPad.

7. Select update and MAKE SURE it backs up.

By the time I got to step 7, I already had the software downloaded, I just kept getting the same ambiguous "internal error" message (no reference to the error $).

Give that a shot.

OK...

I tried it again and this time get the message that "The iPad cannot be resotred at this time because the ipad software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable. (Underlining mine)

Please try again.

It's Steve's fault because he made these devices so well that there are millions of us trying to update at the same time!!

Relaaaax.
