iOS 5 - iPad could not be restored

I've tried several times to update my iPad 2 to iOS 5.

It took forever to download the software. I updated iTunes to the latest version, rebooted the computer and went about updating my iPad.

After iTunes reported it was backing up my iPad, it attempted to restore the software but failed with the message "The iPad "Ezlivin's iPad" could not be restored. An internal error occurred."

***? What "internal error"?

I've tried this several times with the same failure message.

Next time why not give me a Blue Screen of Death with incomprehensible textual gibberish? It'll make as much sense....

I have the feeling this issue mostly affects PC users, since we're the ones that usually have USB ports on monitors, keyboards, etc.

The Director of my department just tried updating his iPad2 to iOS5, as per his normal morning routine, by plugging it into his Dell monitor.. For some reason, this time the update failed and his iPad2 was stuck in "connect to iTunes" and he got an Error 1611. He brought me the iPad2 (I'm IT support) and I couldn't get it to connect or update on my computer, either. I also used a USB port on my PC's Dell monitor.

After using Google and seeing a few posts here, I tried to plug directly into my PC's front USB ports and the update succeeded. My Director's meeting notes and voice recordings prior to his last backup (about a week ago) are all gone, which is quite a bit of information. I was a little frustrated that I couldn't even see the iPad2 as a browseable device where I could save everything externally before iTunes nuked it.

No warnings say that the iPhone/iPad should be plugged directly into the PC, do they? Why was this update any different?

I think, for the better of all, and since the Director lost a lot of meeting notes and time this morning, the department will be replacing 10+ iPads with Android tablets in the near future.

Like a lot of other folks, I'm getting errors (internal error with no errror code) when I try to do the update on my IPAD. I appears to be locked up with the little spiral of lines. Every once in a while it will beep and the spiral will move a little like it thinks it's doing something. I tried restoring but it fails to restore from the last backup. I tried the hard reset (home and power button) but it just ends up back with the same spiral. I tried resyncing and ITunes goes throught the motions and thinks the it did the resync but the display on the IPAD doesn't change. How can I resatore from an earlier backup? Any other suggestions?

I just solved my problem here.

IPad 2 was frozen with the apple logo and progress bar, during iOS5 update, using Windows 7 64bit.

I pulled the cable - that's when I started looking around for solutions.

Hard Reset the iPad - press and hold power and menu buttons for about 7 seconds. Fortunately it worked, going back to factory settings (awaiting to be plugged to iTunes)

Updated the iTunes SW.

Entered my Firewall suite settings (Avast 6) and disabled both firewall and real-time shields.

Plugged the iPad to a single USB port (not a hub).

This time iTunes recognized it, restored the backup and applied the update.

All good.
