I download iOS5 but Multitasking Gestures is not working. I looked around and could not find any where to turn it on or off. Can someone help me out?

Tgara: which transformation are you thinking requires that processing power?

- panning 3 images to switch between apps? yeah, maybe ;)

- but: capturing and moving an image upward to reveal the multitasking bar? something that the iPad 1's chip can still do with the home double-click?

I'm very interested to know your stance on this topic -- have you personally experinced this feature on an iPad 1?

The feature has been functioning for me without issue on all of our development iPad since it was enabled for developers -- and on my personal iPad which is used as my primary project management and content creation device.

Given that the key gripe for me is the 4/5 fingers UP gesture to reveal the multi-tasking bar.

It's way more convenient (and quieter when I'm trying to be silent in bed and not disturb my girlfriend) than that home button double-click.

Do you reckon the iPad 1 chip can handle 4 fingers up -- granted there may be time involved in selectively enabling that gesture + pinch to home and disabling the left-right swipe -- or do you reckon the A5 is required for pinch-to home aswell?

This was just a rumor I saw on the internet. I have no facts to back it up (not that facts matter today anyway...)

In any case, from your rant, I'd guess you and many others are ready to give Apple the old "Single Digit Salute" gesture, if ya know what I mean.... 😉 I feel your pain.

The biggiest issue for me is the failure (for whatever reason) to document that the feature would not be available on the original iPad. Seams to me they had to code an exception to accomplish this difference. At least I wouldn't have installed twice and spent hours figuring out what was wrong with my iPad. Things I used to have to do when I was using Microsoft products.

LOL -- I was trying to phrase my rant in an inquisitive mannor :p

Facts, yes, I hear you!

I'm happy to admit that any assumption that the 4/5 finger gestures "work fine" on iPad 1 just because they worked in 4.3 does not take into account how they may function as part of iOS 5 on a device -- which is why I'm genuinely interested in whether specific less-demanding gestures (hopefully the swipe up and pinch to home) could be implemented without the A5 Chip.

To be honest it actually feels like Apple is perfoming the single digit salute to iPad 1 users who are so outdated with their slow 2010 hardware. How dare we use our devices for so long :/

I tell you I've been doing a whole lot more double-tapping of the home button lately, and every time I do I think of the mistake of upgrading to iOS 5 so soon :)

I'm curious to know why you are posting in this topic?

Just trying to keep up on what's going on regarding the iOS upgrade, actually.

Lots of people are upset. Someone in another thread was thinking about starting an Occupy Apple movement in response to the iOS upgrade and yawning introduction of the iPhone 4S.

OK -- this has been a much anticipated event.

This topic is consuming a lot my time and that of our development team and I'm discussing the upgrade with more and more clients who are now seeing app updates that are requiring them to upgrade to iOS 5.

To be honest this is the type of damage control and rapid software feature development and release I'm normally supporting my team and clients teams it! So it's refreshing to be on the "Client" side of the sh_tstorm for a change... although part of me would love to be in the Apple brainstorming and damage control side too :p

Imagine the kick-back I'd receive if we tried to tell our customers, oh, we had to pull that feature we had you testing because your hardware is outdated. But if you upgrade to a new server we'll give you the feature for free, so... shall I invoice you now or after we do the install your new server?!

it only supports ipad 2 because of the A5 chip. the lack of ram and cpu performance would make the ipad 1 slugish

It's obviously due to technical limitations of the iPad1, similar to the reason why Flash is also not supported.

The only aspect that bothers me is the fact I have been using the gestures on the iPad1 and they worked just fine.

Makes me wonder if my iPad really could run Flash as well, but I am being blocked from using it for the same reason they are now blocking my gestures... money.

No, you cannot use Flash on your iPad because Adobe abandoned Flash for iOS a couple of years ago because they could not make it work.

The gestures worked in iOS 4.3.x on iPad 1. I believe, I do not know for a fact, that the gestures would also work in iOS 5 and Apple has just made a descision not to extend the gestures to the iPad 1.

Apple has enraged folks in the past, but they rarely reverse course. They will enrage us in the future, you can bet on it.

I have used multitouch gestures on my 1st gen iPad for months and love it. IT WORKS! Now it's gone and it seems the 8 page discussion tread about this is gone too. Also gone is the statement that this feature is available on "iPad" as they changed that in the US version of apple.com. It is still there in the Swedish though. Soon this post will be gone too I guess...

Apple just lost a happy mac user since 1990.

No it is still there.
