It's true but unfortunately irrelevant that the iPad 2 has the A5 chip. As anyone who's been using the XCode workaround on 4.3 can attest, multi-tasking gestures work fine on the A4.

Well, it may have worked fine for you, but perhaps not so much for Apple who are more interested in how the entire device works. There may have been issues with multi-tasking gestures that affected other parts of the iPad 1 device due to it's (now obsolete) hardware.

AssistiveTouch can be used to completely replace the home button, you can tap/double-tap/tripple-tap it to perform whatever function like the hardware home button. Quite an interesting implementation. Any number of finger gestures can also be perfomed with one finger or a stylus.

AssistiveTouch does not perform the functions of multitasking gestures, apart from the fact that it delivers an on-screen home button.

I have a developer account and used for a while the new gestures. I loved it. It's almost the same as using a computer with natural multitask.

Cutting this feature on iPad1 because of a political decision - yes, because technically worked like a charm on my iPad1 - is a shot in the foot. I'm in rage!

Just remembering to those Olympo guys at Apple, that several countries have huge taxation. I bought my iPad1 legally here in Brazil, back 10 months ago and I STILL PAYING IT in a monthly basis. Now I'm a beggar to you?!?!

Just because I'm not up to date with your new parafernalia?

Many Thanks!

I will remember this when I suggest friends and colleagues with the new options on the tablets market. I love to read magazines an watch videos, as the same for several people. And that. any tablet could do.

I am starting to see posts around the Internet that the iPad 1 with iOS 5 is having memory issues. There is a thread here about an Electronic Arts game that worked fine on the iPad 1 with iOS 4.3.5, but not that they guys have upgraded to iOS 5 the game drags.

MT gestures may be in the same boat, not enough memory on the iPad 1 to run iOS 5 with MTG. MTG would always have to be in memory to offer the swiping gestures instantly. That may also be why the photo editing is not available in the Photos app on iPad 1 with iOS 5, not enough memory to hold the original in memory and also a copy with the edits at the same moment.

Next week will be when writers for Wired, MacWorld , Gizmodo, Cnet, etc start getting access to their various contacts at Apple and start writing about the new iOS and the decisions behind what was implemented in which devices and I bet that is the limitation for the iPad 1, the memory necessary for some features.

That's an interesting thought, Dah veed. I've only worked with the gestures on 4.3, maybe iOS 5 kills their usefulness on a first generation iPad. Perhaps someone who tried them on a beta iOS 5 seed would know, but there's non-disclosure issues with discussing prerelease builds.

More reason just to stick with iOS 4.3, I think, until the day comes when a hardware upgrade is worthwhile or iOS 5 has better support for first generation iPads.

This sounds an awful lot like their stance on Flash.

But after this, how am I to believe anything Apple says.

They tell me my iPad can't run gestures, even though I have been using them for months... just like they said the iPad can't run Flash even though all other tablets do it fine, like my xoom.

I think the spin doctors need more smoke and more mirrors because things are getting very clear very fast.

(please don't brick my ipad for posting this... actually go ahead, ya gonna do it anyway, let's get it over with)

I think you may be over-simplifying the situation. My belief is that for technical reasons, the current upgrade of multitask gestures was simply not compatible with iOS5 in the iPad 1, or the software for those features was not yet ready in time for the iOS 5 launch. From a business perspective, it makes no sense to not include it if they could, and result in frustration of many iPad 1 users.

I'm guessing that since it worked in earlier versions of iOS5, there may have been technical issues that resulted in Apple scrapping those features for now. I'm hoping there may be a patch or upgrade on the way.

Unfortunately, you speak from a totally hypothetical perspective. For those of us who have been using the gestures, we know that not to be true. I am a developer and had enabled the gestures on iOS 4.3. They worked really well. There was no lag or inlimitation of any sort. The decision to eliminate gestures is a marketing move. While I like Apple products, I do not like many of their decisions, as they sometimes act callous towards their customers and developers.

I think you may be speaking hypothetically now. Do you have any facts or evidence to back up your claim that Apple is doing this purely as marketing move?
