i've got the same problem. it will not sync wirelessly. i tried the suggestions above. every time i disconnect my iphone disappears from the device list. not sure why. my daughters ipod is permanently connected.
help please.....😟
The following link provided the solution for me:
http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/18359/troubleshooting-itunes-wi-fi-sync-problems- in-windows/
Just to pinpoint my problem, i had disabled some services trying to optimize the startup time of my laptop, so i followed the instructions on that link, checked the services mentioned there, and voila, everything working as expected.
After about a 30% success rate of Wi-Fi syncing, I am now down to a 0% success rate over the last two days. Nothing's changed in my system config, so I don't know what the deal is. The only thing I can think of is that my D-Link DIR-655 router is fairly old, HW model A3. I may swap it for the newer B version and see where things go from there.
Honestly, I don't know why I'm bothering with this; must be my obsessive desire to get things to work correctly. Ugh. 😠
I spent a bit of time on this issue, since I hit it too.
Following a bit of research and testing, plus a bit of monitoring with Comodo's firewall's active connections page and some work in Wireshark, I have a solution.
The answer is to add the following firewall rules to your PC running iTunes.
mDNS Responder listens on TCP/5354
Permit inbound TCP connections to your PC on this port
You can restrict the source address of this connection to your LAN subnet if you wish
Note that this service makes a couple of outbound connections when it starts up, but these close shortly after.
AppleMobileDevice Service listens on TCP/27015
You can restrict the source address of this connection to your LAN subnet if you wish
Note that this sevice will make many other outbound connections since it connects to the iPad's / iPhones via a standard unicast connection.
mDNS Multicast (the one I believe others have missed)
Source address : Your LAN subnet
Destination address : 224.0.0.251
Protocol UDP
Source port 5353
Destination port 5353
Once you've added these to your firewall configuration.
exit iTunes
Restart the apple Bonjour service
Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service
Restart iTunes
It will take a minute or so to see the other devices, but it will work - assuming of course you've also enabled the wi-fi sync option in itunes too.
it-works:
I was able to add the firewall rules regarding the mDNS Responder and AppleMobileDevice Service to my Norton Security Suite firewall. However, I can't quite figure out how to add the suggested mDNS Multicast rule to Norton; with regard to this rule, are you referring to the firewall running on the iTunes PC (i.e., Norton) or the router? If the router, I do have Multicast Streams enabled (in the Advanced/Advanced Network tab of my DIR-655 router). Or are you referring to something different? Thanks.
I'm not a Norton user, so can't give specifics but in general, the multicast rule on the firewall needs to be from source address 224.0.0.251 to your PC using UDP protocol on destination port 5353. The other parts such as source port and source address can be omitted if your firewall doesn't support this.
Look for a specific source address option and put the above address into that. Alternately, but less secure is to use ANY as the source address, but only do this if your have a router and not one of the older USB dongle to connect to the Internet (time for an upgrade if you do !).
The problem is that most domestic firewall products assume "home lan" as the only source for trusted traffic, which is generally sensible, however multicast uses 224 as its source addresses which is outside the normal 192.168 addresses that most home routers use, hence why they are dropped and why wifi sync fails. Basically the devices fail to discover each other.
The multicast frames will have a source address of your iTunes / iPhone / IPad devices and a destination of the multicast address. This is how the discovery part works, all originate within your home network and stay within your network, they don't go out to the Internet. Once a device has discovered its peer, it changes to unicast directly between the two devices starting on 5354 and moving to 27015 after that.
All the rules are on the PC running iTunes, there is nothing to do on the router to the Internet assuming of course that you're using a standard home setup of one router and a couple of PC's on wireless / wired to the router. If you are doing anything fancy at home with networks, then you need to ensure that multicast is able to be forwarded between VLANs hosting your iTunes PC and your iphones / ipads.
I managed to fix this on Windows 7 64-Bit after a lot of hassle, AVG is incredibly particular about what IP's it will allow, and without a real-time log which I could monitor I found it very difficult to configure correctly, so I binned it and went with a great piece of Freeware - Personal Firewall 7.0 instead. Using this I was able to monitor the real-time log and watch the packets from iTunes and the iPhone attempt to reach each other (and be blocked), a simple click then marked those IP's as trusted and allowed communication between them, my iPhone and iTunes are now happily syncing as I type this, I plan to bin AVG firewall on my other computers as well, AVG Anti-Virus has always been clean quick and efficient, hence why I've always opted for it, but the firewall is reminicent of bloatware and needs a thorough overhaul, until then I'd recommend you go with a firewall which has an easily configurable interface and a real time log which allows you to open ports directly from it. I used Personal Firewall 7.0 like I say but I'm sure there are many others out there. What a pity that freeware can do what something I paid for cannot!
Cheers.
Helios.
Well ... after much grumbling, especially on this board, I followed Helios' advice and I got this silly thing to work ... mostly. It still has trouble Wi-Fi syncing on occasion, but I think the success rate is now in the 75% range -- much better than I have experienced to date. Essentially, after seeing Helios' note, I cleared/reset the Norton firewall of all its settings and started afresh. I then switched from automatic firewall control to manual. Yes, I did have a ton of applications to approve/allow, but many of them were associated with iTunes and Wi-Fi sync. After getting through the host of firewall rules/requests for Internet access that popped up, iTunes finally began working in Wi-Fi sync mode. Apparently, the Norton firewall had automatically blocked some request by iTunes that I could only correct by wiping out the firewall settings/rules that had amassed over the last several months (and I have no idea which rule it set to block which request).
I guess the real test will be to see if I still see success in a day or two.
It was Virus Barrier on my system too. You don't have to uninstall the whole program. Just go to the anti-vandal tab and check the blocked addresses. Somehow my iPhone but not my iPad ended up in this list. Once I unchecked the blocked address my iPhone wifi-synched easily.
Ugh ... I'm back to the drawing board. I've been following Norton's Firewall log, and it seems that whenever a sync fails, Norton reports something along the lines of "Protecting your connection to a newly detected network on adapter \"Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface\" (IP address: .....). Detected, No Action Required". This is in spite of resetting the Firewall, wiping out all the rules, and creating numerous rules in manual mode allowing all connections between any Apple item (i.e., when a pop up screen asks me to allow or block). Any ideas? It seems I need to dig deeper into Norton, but I can't think of any further options at this point. I'm not otherwise finding any blocked addresses associated with anything Apple related.
Thanks!
i have also got problems syncing my phone with itunes over wifi. I have the latest itunes on my system and my iphone is upto date as well. i tried everything but the syn now option in the phone is still greyed out. I even tried the firewall thing as suggested by few users but i didnt work either(even turned off the firewall and tried). Can any one here please help me with the problem.
A computer restart fixed this issue for me. Maybe something to try.
After much frustration and narrowing down everything in this thread, I have a consistent culprit causing my iPad and iPhone 4 to not show up under Devices in iTunes: Windows Updates. I have automatic updates on for Windows. If I go to Add/Remove Programs and choose to "Repair" Apple Mobile Device Support I can then start iTunes and the devices show up. This would also explain why restarting has worked for some. Some of the updates that are regular require a restart to complete, but do not make you restart or notify you.
Windows 7 64bit Pro
iTunes 10.5.2.11
iOS 5.01 both devices
I am getting the same problem. It worked once before but now states it will sync when computer is available. It is! Ipad2 syncs wirelessly without any problems it is just my iPhone 4.
I almost exhausted all option but I just checked router NPNP setting and increased advertising time from 4 to 10, and the problem was SOLVED!!
